WASHINGTON, D.C. – NASA announced this week that astronaut Jeanette Epps has been assigned to its Boeing Starline-1 mission. The mission is the first operational crewed flight of Boeing’s CST-100 Starling spacecraft on a mission to the International Space Station.Epps will join astronauts Sunita Williams and Josh Cassada for a six-month expedition planned for a launch in 2021 to the orbiting space lab. This assignment will also make Epps the first Black woman to live and work in space for an extended period of time, CNBC and USA Today report.Epps reacted to the announcement in a video on Twitter, saying she’s looking forward to the mission. While this will be her first time in space, Epps said she’s “flown in helicopters with Sunni flying” and been “in the backseat of a T38 with Josh flying.”Thank you @JimBridenstine! WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has vetoed the annual defense policy bill.Trump followed through on threats to veto the measure that has broad bipartisan support in Congress and it potentially sets up the first override vote of his presidency. The bill would affirm 3% pay raises for U.S. troops and authorize more than 0 billion in military programs and construction.Trump has offered a series of rationales for vetoing the bill, including his calls for lawmakers to include limits on social media companies he claimed are biased against him.The bill, which was approved earlier this month by overwhelming majorities in both legislative chambers, had enough votes to override Trump’s veto. The House approved the bill by a 335-78 margin, while the Senate approved it 84-13.Part of Trump’s grievance with the act was due to Section 230 not being repealed, which is a code that protects websites and social media companies from litigation for materials published by users. Trump has called on the repeal of Section 230.Trump has aired his frustration at major social media organizations such as Twitter for tagging tweets that contain misinformation.“The Act fails even to make any meaningful changes to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, despite bipartisan calls for repealing that provision,” Trump alleges in a letter returning the bill to the House. “Section 230 facilitates the spread of foreign disinformation online, which is a serious threat to our national security and election integrity. It must be repealed.”House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she is in favor of amending the code, but not repealing it entirely. Pelosi said there is bipartisan support for revising the code.“I don’t like 230, I think it needs to be revised,” Pelosi said. “You cannot repeal it or you will destroy protections for small businesses and entrepreneurs.”Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, a close ally of the president's, said that Trump would approve defense spending and the stimulus package if Congress agreed to repeal Section 230. On Tuesday, Trump said he was not supportive of the stimulus bill passed by overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate earlier this week. The bills would have provided 0 direct payments to most Americans. Trump, however, did not outright say he would veto the pandemic stimulus package. "I hope Speaker Pelosi will agree with President Trump that Big Tech needs to be reined in by winding down Section 230 liability protections," Graham tweeted. "I have reason to believe this combination will lead to President Trump supporting the NDAA and COVID19 omnibus bills." 2620

Washington, DC, police have identified a man who shot himself in the head in front of the White House at just before noon Saturday as 26-year-old Cameron Ross Burgess of Maylene, Alabama."At approximately 11:46 am, Burgess approached the vicinity of the North White House fence line and removed a concealed handgun and fired several rounds, none of which appear at this time to have been directed towards the White House," the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Sunday.A law enforcement source told CNN the shooter shot his phone before shooting himself. No suicide note was found, but incoherent sentences were found in a book recovered on the scene, the source said. The man died from his injuries; no one else was hurt in the incident, a Secret Service spokesperson said. The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.Burgess' remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy, the police department said.President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, at the time and were scheduled to return to Washington on Saturday afternoon for the annual Gridiron Club Dinner."We are aware of the incident," deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said after the shooting. "The President has been briefed. I refer you to the Secret Service for any more information."The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation, the Secret Service spokesperson said. The Secret Service said Saturday that pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House was affected by the incident.Law enforcement personnel spent about four hours Saturday afternoon searching a maroon Honda Accord with an Alabama license plate parked on the street near the Capital Hilton hotel, a few blocks from the White House. After officers blocked off the area, a bomb squad swept the car, and law enforcement personnel removed several items from it, including what looked like pictures and documents from a cigar box, before towing the car away. A Secret Service source confirmed to CNN that the victim's car was located in the area where the search of the vehicle took place. 2264
