CANTON, Ohio — A 25-year-old Ohio woman has been charged for allegedly starving two dogs locked in a cage, causing one of the animals to eat the other after it died, according to court records.Court records state that on or about April 5, Jessica J. Swinehart locked a beagle in a cage with a German shepherd-mix and starved the animals. When the beagle died, the other dog ate it to survive. When authorities found the German shepherd, it appeared to have lost nearly two-thirds of its body weight. It was still locked in the cage with the decaying beagle.An arrest warrant was filed April 8 and she was later arrested.Swinehart has been charged with two counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.A future court date is pending. 779

Attorney General Bill Barr said Friday the Justice Department will have special counsel Robert Mueller's report ready to release by "mid-April, if not sooner."In a letter to the chairmen of the House and Senate judiciary committees, Barr said his department is "well along" making redactions, with the assistance of the special counsel. Barr said the report is "nearly 400 pages long," not including appendices and tables and "sets forth the Special Counsel's findings, his analysis, and the reasons for his conclusions."Barr offered to testify after the report is released, suggesting May 1 for the Senate committee and May 2 for the House committee.Barr wrote that he and Mueller were working to redact four types of information from the report: grand jury material, sensitive intelligence material, information that involves ongoing investigations, and "information that would unduly infringe on the personal privacy and reputational interests of peripheral third parties."But the redactions Barr is working on are unlikely to satisfy Democrats. House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler of New York asked Barr to work with the committee to ask the courts to make grand jury information public, according to a Democratic aide, who said Barr would not commit to doing so in a call earlier this week.Democrats argue there is precedent for releasing grand jury material, and the aide said they see that as the "primary obstacle" to making the full Mueller report public. 1478

At first, Hillary Slusser thought she had the flu.She hadn't been feeling well for a couple weeks but, after getting really sick at work, she went home and took not one, but three pregnancy tests. Just to be sure.Long story short, she was pregnant. But she wasn't the only one.14 nurses, two doctors and one social worker are all expectingBefore Slusser had even publicly announced her pregnancy, her friend and fellow nurse in the Emergency Department at Vanderbilt University's medical center posted her sonogram online.A week later, another nurse in their department posted that she was expecting, too.A week later, it was another nurse.Now, there are 17 people in her department who are pregnant -- 14 nurses, two doctors and one social worker -- all due between July and December. And, with others having had babies earlier in the year, Slusser said there would be over 20 births in the department by the end of 2019."By the time it got to be 17, everybody was just like, 'There is something going,'" Slusser told CNN. "But it was very exciting to be sharing this with all the girls."For the majority of the women, this will be their first child, which makes the occasion even more special.Everyone is pitching in so they can keep doing their jobsWith 17 pregnancies, though, comes 17 months-long absences from work. Slusser is taking 16 weeks off, but she said not everyone is that fortunate. Most are taking 12, and the department has already sent out an email asking for delivery dates in preparation for the absences to come.The department has been very supportive, Slusser said, with people taking on extra weight. Most of the women work in trauma, which she said can be labor intensive. Staff members must wear heavy protective gear beneath their gown, along with gloves, a mask, an eye shield and a hairnet, all just to protect from blood and body fluids. Understandably, wearing all that while eight months pregnant can be a lot.The department has moved some of the women from working trauma because of their pregnancies, which Slusser said has been heartbreaking. But others in the department have been helping."Even our attending physicians help lift patients over so I don't have to do that," Slusser said. "Little things like that make us still be able to do our jobs."It's still stressful, and Slusser said she does get a bit more tired throughout her shift. But with all the support from her coworkers, she'll be ready for the big day. 2466

  

Boeing employees knew about problems with flight simulators for the now-grounded 737 Max and apparently tried to hide them from federal regulators, according to documents released Thursday.In internal messages, Boeing employees talked about misleading regulators about problems with the simulators. In one exchange, an employee told a colleague they wouldn’t let their family ride on a 737 Max.Boeing said the statements “raise questions about Boeing’s interactions with the FAA” in getting the simulators qualified. But said the company is confident that the machines work properly.“These communications do not reflect the company we are and need to be, and they are completely unacceptable,” Boeing said in a statement. Employees also groused about Boeing’s senior management, the company’s selection of low-cost suppliers, wasting money, and the Max.“This airplane is designed by clowns who in turn are supervised by monkeys,” one employee wrote.Names of the employees who wrote the emails and text messages were redacted.The Max has been grounded worldwide since March, after two crashes killed 346 people. The crash that month of an Ethiopian Airlines flight had been preceded in October 2018 by the crash of a brand-new Max operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air.Boeing is still working to update software and other systems on the Max to convince regulators to let it fly again. The work has taken much longer than Boeing expected.The latest batch of internal Boeing documents were provided to the Federal Aviation Administration and Congress last month and released on Thursday. The company said it was considering disciplinary action against some employees.An FAA spokesman said the agency found no new safety risks that have not already been identified as part of the FAA’s review of changes that Boeing is making to the plane. The spokesman, Lynn Lunsford, said the simulator mentioned in the documents has been checked three times in the last six months.”Any potential safety deficiencies identified in the documents have been addressed,” he said in a statement.A lawmaker leading one of the congressional investigations into Boeing called them “incredibly damning.”“They paint a deeply disturbing picture of the lengths Boeing was apparently willing to go to in order to evade scrutiny from regulators, flight crews, and the flying public, even as its own employees were sounding alarms internally,” said Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., chairman of the House Transportation Committee.DeFazio said the documents detail “some of the earliest and most fundamental errors in the decisions that went into the fatally flawed aircraft.” DeFazio and other critics have accused the company of putting profit over safety.The grounding of the Max will cost the company billions in compensation to families of passengers killed in the crashes and airlines that canceled thousands of flights. Last month, the company ousted its CEO and decided to temporarily halt production of the plane in mid-January, a decision that is rippling out through its supplier network. 3066
