SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new cancer treatment is now available at the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.This week 31-year-old William Apodaca became the first patient in San Diego County to receive the unique form of targeted cancer therapy. Apodaca was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer three years ago when doctors found neuroendocrine tumors in his pancreas.Neuroendocrine tumors are formed in hormone-making cells. They can grow in spots like your pancreas, stomach, and intestines. “It's a rare tumor that patients can live decades with and the hope is to improve quality of life by minimizing their need for more toxic chronic therapies,” said Dr. Marin Xavier, a Medical Oncologist at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center. RELATED: FDA approves two cancer treatments after expedited reviews“It was just devastating,” remembers Apodaca, who is also a nurse. After chemotherapy and other cancer-fighting therapies, Apodaca was finally able to try the new treatment, Lutathera, after it was FDA-approved earlier this year. Lutathera uses radioactively charged proteins to seek and attack cancer cells from the inside out. It is administered in four doses, which are given approximately every other month until they are finished. Apodaca had been traveling to Los Angeles for the treatments but was able to complete his final one in San Diego. He now has more energy and looks forward to going back to work, traveling, and getting married.“This medication is pretty much giving me a second chance at life,” said Apodaca. “Picking up the pieces of where my life was.”The drug works for two to five years, depending on how aggressive the tumors are. Patients who respond well can get retreated.Fifteen local patients have already signed up to get the new treatment and more are expected to come from other cities. It is covered by Medicare and other private insurers. 1874
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 65-year-old woman who was hit by a vehicle while crossing a Serra Mesa road Monday has died.The woman was walking to her car with her two adult children in the intersection of Ruffin Rd. and Village Glen Drive just before 8 p.m., according to San Diego Police.Her children separated and the two children made it safely to the other side of the intersection. When the woman was crossing, she was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound.RELATED: 65-year-old woman struck by car while crossing the street in Serra Mesa Christmas EveThe driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old, remained at the scene for police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California lawmaker is planning to move forward on a housing bill that would eliminate hyper low-density zoning near transit and job centers.Senate Bill 50 aims to clear the way for apartment buildings and affordable housing in those locations so more people can live near transit and near where they work, proponents say.California State Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco tells 10News, in January SB 50 will come back before the Senate, and he intends to move it forward.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Zoning rules partially responsible for low housing supply, report says"California has a massive housing shortage – which threatens our economy, environment, and diversity – and state action is essential to solve this major problem," Wiener said in a statement.While they wait for action at the state level, some San Diego community groups are pushing for local lawmakers to move forward with their version, dubbed SD 50."We are still working in these neighborhoods to try and change those communities," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) San Diego.Flores said the City of San Diego needs to end its single-family home zoning regulations. "I believe San Diegans should be in control of what happens in our neighborhoods. "Fees are what pay for the infrastructure because of Prop 13. The state can pick up that cost of infrastructure. There was nothing in SB 50 to mandate that."If San Diego updated its zoning policies, it wouldn't be alone.City leaders in Minneapolis passed "Minneapolis 2040" which aims to increase affordable housing and racial disparities in housing.Ricardo Flores said he believes it's time for politicians to make San Diego more inclusive."If you own a single-family home on your lot and you want to keep that you should be allowed to keep it, but if you like me and are interested in building a couple extra units for mom and dad to move into or to rent it out to help pay for a mortgage you should be allowed to do that," Flores said.In a statement to 10News, San Diego City Council member and Land Use and Housing Committee member Scott Sherman wrote, "A recent study noted that 47 percent of housing costs are due to government red tape and regulation. Since taking office, I have worked to reform land use codes and streamline the permitting process to make homebuilding less expensive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A decision regarding the release of a sexually violent predator into Jacumba Hot Springs has been delayed.A judge said he still needed to look at alternatives after researching the proposed home at 45612 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba Hot Springs where 60-year-old Michael Poulsom would live if released. After listening to testimony, the judge says he’s not ready to make a decision about whether to grant his petition to be released from a mental hospital.Poulsom was convicted on three separate occasions, including twice in San Diego, for sex crimes involving children. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1995, but committed to a state hospital as a SVP, a designation for sthose convicted of a sexually violent offense and diagnosed with a mental disorder. In Poulsom's case, he was diagnosed with pedophilia disorder.He has since petitioned for his release into a conditional release program for sex offenders. Doctors have medically cleared the release.RELATED: Bill introduced to keep sexually violent predator hearings open to publicAmong those that testified today was County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who represents the area where Poulsom would be released. She says there has to be other areas he can go."Where are the other 700 places they checked out. I question that and I question if they checked out over 700," Jacob said.This hearing comes just after the court of appeals threw out a judge’s decision that would have freed the man known as the “Bolder than Most Rapist,” Alvin Quarles. Quarles was charged in more than 50 rapes, robberies, and burglaries in the 80s. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of City of San Diego employees is suing the city after they were exposed to asbestos inside their office for months.The class-action lawsuit, filed in Superior Court June 21, accuses high-ranking city officials of knowing about the asbestos at 1010 Second Avenue, but keeping the workers there because they did not want to break the lease. 374
