LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car burst into flames after a crash in La Mesa early Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on SR-94 near the 125 before 3:30 a.m. CHP says the driver was speeding on SR-94 west when he tried merging onto the 125 on-ramp. The man then lost control and flipped several times before the car went up in flames. Witnesses stopped to help, but the man was able to get out of the vehicle on his own. The driver was able to escape the crash with only minor injuries. CHP says he is being checked for DUI. Traffic was shut down on the 125 on-ramp for a short time after the crash, but was reopened before 6 a.m. 676

(KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego have developed a new way to field test for Fentanyl, a dangerous opioid that is deadly even in trace amounts.Similar to diabetes testing strips that measure glucose levels, the scientists at the Center for Wearable Sensors created a testing strip that can detect Fentanyl."You simply swipe the surface and collect the sample and analyze it in one or two minutes, on the spot," says Joseph Wang, the Center's Director.The strip uses electrochemical carbon and silver electrodes. The meter runs currents from the electrodes through the sample. Based on how the material reacts, it can tell if Fentanyl is present, down to a nanogram level.They recently published their success in an article in the Chemical and Engineering News.The practical applications of the testing strips are wide-ranging, says Wang. He believes that law enforcement, first responders, border patrol agents and post office workers would use this new technology to test any unknown substance.Recently, law enforcement agencies have been looking for ways to field-test for Fentanyl, since any contact with the drug can lead to an overdose or even death.The San Diego Sheriff's Department bought 15 TruNarc devices this past fall. Those scan materials and tell what kind of drugs are present. (KGTV) -- Crews were able to stop an eight-acre brush fire in Lakeside Sunday afternoon.According to Cal Fire, the fire broke out on the 14000 block of El Monte Road around 2:30 p.m. The fire burned in a river bottom and scorched eight acres. By about 3:45 p.m., the forward spread had been completely stopped, the agency tweeted.No structures were threatened and no injuries reported. 420
LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Nearly 200 people turned out for a vigil in Lakeside honoring two teenagers killed in a car accident last weekend. Isaac Culkin and Justin Kyte were killed on Saturday, Jan. 11 when the car they were riding in crashed into a tree. Two others in the car suffered moderate injuries, but survived. Those closest to the boys gathered at the scene of the crash for a candlelight vigil, a moment of silence and prayer. The teens' closest friends remembered them as hardworking, funny boys who loved to have fun offroading the desert. CHP says Kyte was behind the wheel when he lost control of the car and hit a tree on Willow Road. Culkin was in the passenger seat. CHP says speed was a factor, but it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved. Services for Culkin are scheduled Thursday, January 23rd. Information on Kyte's services have not been made public.
