SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After weeks of large crowds, no masks or social distancing in Ocean Beach, the City of San Diego put together a compliance team to educate people about the county’s public health order.A team of about 12 people consisting of code compliance, parking enforcement, and park rangers handed out face masks to those who didn’t have them on and asked for compliance.“There was unacceptable levels of people coming together, congregating together getting really, really close without masks or social distancing,” said Joel Day, the senior advisor for COVID Response and Recovery with the City of San Diego. “We’re asking people don’t congregate here, please wear a mask if you’re around other people, and please socially distance and so far it’s looking pretty great.”Within one hour, Day said the team handed out about 300 masks.Earlier in the day, residents noted that Veterans Plaza in Ocean Beach appeared to be less crowded. But as the sun went down, the drum circle returned, and so did the crowds. They cleared out by about 10:30 PM.Resident Tim Johnson said home and business owners have had to deal with the same scene repeatedly. Crowds are filling up the park after the farmers market.“There’s piles of trash that get left and open containers, aggressive behavior,” he said.On Tuesday, the city put up a fence to keep the crowds out, but it was quickly torn down.While Johnson said he appreciates the city’s efforts, he said more needs to be done to solve the problem.“The COVID issue is secondary to the other problem, and that other problem is that illegal, obnoxious, aggressive behavior has continued on without being enforced,” said Johnson. 1677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A successful regular season could mean some end-of-the-year award hardware for members of the San Diego Padres.On Monday, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) revealed the finalists for National League Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year.Manny Machado is among the finalists for National League MVP. The Padres’ star third baseman, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman are all in the running for the award.Noticeably absent from the finalists list is Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was considered among the favorites for the MVP award throughout the season.The last Padres player to be named NL MVP was Ken Caminiti in 1996.The NL Rookie of the Year finalists include Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Alec Bohm of the Phillies, and Devin Williams of the Brewers.If Cronenworth wins the award, he would be the first Padres ROY winner since catcher Benito Santiago in 1987.The Padres’ first-year manager, Jayce Tingler, was named a finalist for the NL’s Manager of the Year award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning was issued for San Diego County’s mountains as a cold storm hit the region Monday..The warning is in place from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.“The agency says heavy snow and strong winds are expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” forecasters said.Total snow accumulations of two to six inches are expected with localized amounts of 12 to 18 inches. The heaviest snow is expected to impact areas above 5,500 feet, however, some snow is expected down to 4,500 feet.Accompanying the snow are heavy winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your area“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service advised.A high surf advisory also takes the place of a beach hazards statement as the storm approaches. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Wednesday for San Diego County coastal areas.Surf begins to build Sunday, peaking Monday afternoon through Tuesday, the agency says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid fears of post-election unrest, parishioners at San Diego's oldest church are meeting the possibility of violence with prayer.It's the morning of the election and Peggy Stolberg is hoping to cast a vote for peace — through prayer."It always seems like prayers are the answers to many things," said Stolberg.Stolberg spent part of her morning in the sanctuary of the Mission San Diego de Alcala, her church for the last 35 years."I pray for the unity of our country. I'm also here to pray for non-violent situations after the results come out," said Stolberg.Peggy is one of many — a few at a time — expected to show up by the end of the day, says Father Bill Springer."A little bit of anxiety," said Father Springer.Father Springer believes this was the first-ever all-day prayer vigil for election peace in the history of the 251-year-old mission."We just felt there was a threat of violence around the election, because of the divisiveness of our society and previous violence in the streets," said Father Springer.Father Springer says to combat that, he's calling upon the power of prayer."Aside from the efficacy of the prayer itself, it also alerts people and puts on their mind that this is something people should be concerned about ... and spread to their neighbors and others that they should have a spirit of peacefulness and spirit of respect for others," said Father Springer. 1419
