CHENGDU, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has urged Party and government departments across the country to focus on improving people's livelihoods to manage social security.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during a two-day meeting on the country's social security management that ended Saturday."Currently, our country's overall social situation is stable... But at the same time, we must see that various conflicts have been emerging, especially as many incidents happened recently that harmed the country's stability and induced tremendous negative effects," Zhou said.He noted that such cases exposed the weaknesses in social construction and social management."Party and government departments should focus their work on ensuring and improving people's livelihoods, and making greater efforts in solving prominent issues in education, employment, medical treatment and social insurance in order to let both urban and rural people share the fruits of the country's development," he said.Zhou also urged social security officials to strengthen social construction and management with more effective measures and greater resolution.During the meeting, representatives from various regions reviewed their working experiences in managing social security.
BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Monday urged greater efforts to make the training of officials more pertinent to and effective in raising their skills at governing.Push forward the reform of the training of officials unswervingly so that the training could better serve the scientific development of the country, said Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee at a conference on the reform in Beijing on Monday.He added that the training must be both relevant and complementary to officials' jobs and called for the optimization of the systems that educate officials on Party theories, governance and Party spirit.He stressed the need to create a diverse official training system with more involvement from higher-learning institutions and research institutes besides the current main training channel of Party schools and administration schools.He also called for better training of officials at grassroots levels.The general office of the CPC Central Committee issued the text of the reform outlines for the period of 2010 to 2020 on Tuesday. XIANGNING, Shanxi, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Eight miners trapped for 35 hours in a flooded colliery in north China's Shanxi Province were saved early Friday, rescuers said. One miner is still missing.The eight survivors were taken to hospital for treatment. They are in stable conditions, said Li Youcai, deputy chief of Shengping Coal Mine Workers' Hospital in Taitou Town.They are expected to recover and be discharged from hospital in one week, Li said.The first four survivors were rescued and sent to hospital at around 2:30 a.m.; the other four miners were helped out of the pit at around 4:10 a.m., rescuers saidThe eight survivors were known to be alive and had been in close contact with the rescuers via phone after the Shengping Coal Mine in Jixian County where they worked was flooded with torrential rain water Wednesday.The accident happened at around 5 p.m. when 23 miners were performing repair work underground. Fourteen miners managed to escape.Rescuers were still trying to find out the whereabouts of the last missing miner, who lost contact with the others after the flood.The Shengping Coal Mine, owned by the Shanxi Coal Transportation and Sales Group Co., Ltd., has an annual output of 900,000 tonnes.
