In the record-setting 562 participants of this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, you will find nine sets of siblings. Sisters Triyatha and Pranathi Jamulla are one set of the siblings, and they think it’s pretty cool they both made it to the national competition. Last year, Triyatha watched Pranathi come in 25thplace in the National Spelling Bee, and it made her want to compete too. This year, the sisters tied in their school’s spelling bee, both earning a trip to nationals.It gave Pranathi a built-in study buddy.“Before, when it would just be me sitting at home and my sister would be out somewhere and doing something else, like it wouldn't be that motivating to study because I know like I'd rather be where she is,” Pranathi says. “And now that we're both in the room studying, it makes it easier to study, I guess.”It also meant Triyatha had an expert to tell her what to expect."Yeah, she definitely helps me to stay calm and composed and gives me a few tips on like winning languages and language patterns,” Triyatha explains.Their mom, Prasanna Jammula, says it’s easier having two spellers in the house.“They quiz each other. That's how they are learning, too," she says. "Now, we are on the same page right. In Aedrin Albright's civics class at Chatham Central High School, the students are getting a real-life lesson in politics.The Bear Creek, North Carolina 10th graders are studying the impeachment process. And as their representatives hear testimony against President Donald Trump in Washington, they are debating whether he should face removal from office."Your job is to try to persuade your classmates in here to come to your side, to your understanding," Albright says to her class. "To see how you see this impeachment process."Earlier this week, the students divided into groups: Pro-impeachment on the right, anti-impeachment on the left, and "I Don't Know" in the middle. The pro-Trump group was by far the largest."I don't think it's my job as a teacher to influence them politically," Albright says. "I think it's my job to teach them the two sides, or the three sides or the four sides. So, it's not my job to say, `Yes, he should be impeached.' I've had them, probably, eight or nine times, 10 times: `What do you think?' And it's like, What do YOU think? And so it's, you know, I want them to tell me instead of me telling them."Bryce Hammer thinks the process is rigged and that Democrats are simply looking for any excuse to oust the Republican president."The Democrats have just been slamming Trump and trying to find every little thing, ever since he got into office," Hammer says. Jackie Wilkinson recently picked up an unknown call at her home.Her cable company was showing on her caller ID, so Wilkinson did what she normally doesn't do with unexpected calls: she answered. "It appeared that Spectrum was calling, our provider for internet, phone and cable services, so I answered, " Wilkinson said.Other customers report receiving similar calls that show up as Cox, Comcast, Xfinity, Charter, Optimum, and others.The caller immediately offered to help lower her bill, so Wilkinson perked up."He asked, 'Do you want to save money?" Wilkinson said. "Naturally, in this day and age, who doesn't want to save money? So I said yes, and he said, 'Great, now tell me how much you are paying.'"But that last comment from the phone rep raised a red flag."These are questions I would think Spectrum would already know," she said. "They can see your billing price right there!"Who was really calling?When the caller then told her she could save money by signing up for a satellite TV service instead, Wilkinson realized it wasn't really Spectrum Cable on the line.Instead, it was a case of "spoofing," where a fake number shows on your caller ID.Scammers have been spoofing the numbers of the FBI and IRS for several years now and getting people to answer the phone that way. It was only natural they'd start pretending to be your cable company.We contacted Spectrum, and the company said it has other complaints about these calls.It recently sent out a warning to customers saying: "If an offer doesn't sound right, customers may ask the representative on the phone to validate they are an employee by looking up their account number. Spectrum representatives will always have an account number." Then call your company (at their customer service number on your bill) and ask if there is any such person working there.Wilkinson just wants to warn others."If you see your cable company calling, you think its important," Wilkinson said. "The phone number appears on your phone as if they are the cable company, so everything seemed legitimate up until the questions." But cable providers never call you to chat about lowering your bill or offering a discount. Kern County Fire has confirmed that a wind turbine caught fire around 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mojave causing a grass fire. Fire officials told Scripps station KERO in Bakersfield the wind turbine is located on the west-side of Highway 14 and crew members are working to put the fire out. A vegetation fire was contained after the flames from the wind turbine fell onto the grass area, according to Kern County Fire. Officials said the grass fire has been contained. There was no immediate word on what caused the fire. 526
