A California police officer was charged Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting at an Oakland-area Walmart store in April.San Leandro Police Officer Jason Fletcher was charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with an incident where he fatally shot 33-year-old Steven Taylor on April 18.According to the Alameda County District Attorney's office, a security guard at the store called police when Taylor tried to leave San Leandro Walmart with a baseball bat and a tent without paying.Fletcher responded to the call and approached Taylor as he entered the store. The officer tried to grab the baseball bat from Taylor, and when he couldn't get control of the bat he drew his stun gun.After firing the stun gun, Taylor stumbled forward with the bat sitll in his hand. According to body camera footage, Fletcher repeatedly asked Taylor to drop the bat. Fletcher then fired his gun once, a shot that proved to be fatal.In its charging statement, the District Attorney's office, claimed that Taylor "posed no threat of imminent deadly force or serious bodily injury" to the officers or anyone else in the store because he had "clearly experienced the shock of the taser as he was leaning forward over his feet and stumbling forward."Fletcher's lawyer, Michael Rains, told the San Francisco Chronicle that he was "very disappointed" that the officer had been charged and that the charges were "undeserved."The decision to file the criminal complaint was made after an intensive investigation and thorough analysis of the evidence and the current law," Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said.Lee Merritt, an attorney for Taylor's family, told NBC News that Taylor was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the shooting.Fletcher will be arraigned on Sept. 15 at a county courthouse in Dublin, California. 1845

A man on a motorcycle is accused of robbing a Mesa, Arizona drive-thru, then riding the wrong way through traffic to escape from police.Mesa police report that on April 5, 43-year-old Kevin Dean Hendrickson approached a McDonald’s drive-thru window near Power Road and Southern Avenue. Witnesses allegedly recorded Hendrickson pointing a handgun at two employees, demanding money.  A Mesa police officer located Hendrickson near Higley Road and Main Street, where he reportedly was seen riding westbound in the eastbound lanes of traffic. Hendrickson abandoned his motorcycle near 52nd Street and Greenway Road, where he was found by a nearby homeowner, hiding in his closet. Hendrickson fled the home, leaving behind his helmet and gun, and taking the resident’s hat and shirt. He was later located by another homeowner, hiding in his trash can. Police soon located and arrested Hendrickson.He has been charged with armed robbery. 979

A gunman armed with a .38 revolver and a shotgun walked into Santa Fe High School in Texas on Friday and killed 10 people, according to authorities.Two days later, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is still touting a shotgun giveaway on his website.The entry period for the drawing began on May 1 -- before the shooting in Santa Fe -- and ends on May 31.Participants in the giveaway enter with a chance to win a 0 certificate that can be redeemed at a licensed gun dealer in Central Texas. Entrants must be Texas residents, per the governor's campaign website, and at least 18 years old. They must also be legally allowed to buy a pump-action shotgun.Abbott's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the shotgun giveaway.Abbott's campaign has also advertised the giveaway on other campaign materials.Vikki Goodwin, a candidate for the State House District 47 in west Travis County, was door-to-door campaigning on Saturday afternoon when she came across a door hanger advertising the giveaway."I was just astounded that he was giving away a shotgun," Goodwin told CNN. A federal judge in Indiana is halting the first federal execution in 17 years, citing concerns over the coronavirus. Daniel Lee had been scheduled to die by lethal injection on Monday. But Chief District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson in Indiana ruled Friday that the execution would be put on hold because the family of the victims wanted to attend but were afraid of traveling during the coronavirus pandemic. The injunction delays the execution until there is no longer such an emergency. The 47-year-old Lee, of Yukon, Oklahoma, was convicted in Arkansas of the 1996 killings of gun dealer William Mueller, his wife, Nancy, and her 8-year-old daughter, Sarah Powell. 673
