SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A sailor was critically injured by a rotating helicopter blade at MCAS Camp Pendleton this week, officials announced Friday.The sailor was struck by a spinning UH-01Y Venom tail rotor blade while the aircraft was on deck Wednesday just after 6 p.m., officials said.The service member was brought to a San Diego hospital after the incident and was in critical condition Friday.Officials did not name the sailor but said they are assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.An investigation has begun, though no additional details were made available. 573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge has ruled that the government can continue waiving environmental laws to proceed with construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall.Judge Gonzalo Curiel issued the ruling Tuesday afternoon. The ruling allows 14 miles of border wall to be built southeast of San Diego.The ruling comes one day after the Washington Post reported that President Trump will visit border wall prototypes in mid-March. RELATED: President Trump to visit San Diego, inspect border wall prototypesIn early February, ABC News reported that the Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to protect endangered butterflies. Environmentalists claim the Quino checkerspot butterfly and a number of other species could be in danger if construction of the border wall continues. “We intend to appeal this disappointing ruling, which would allow Trump to shrug off crucial environmental laws that protect people and wildlife,” said Brian Segee, a senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity.“The Trump administration has completely overreached its authority in its rush to build this destructive, senseless wall. They’re giving unprecedented, sweeping power to an unelected agency chief to ignore dozens of laws and crash through hundreds of miles of spectacular borderlands. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man and a woman were struck by a trolley while riding scooters in Sherman Heights Tuesday night, according to police. According to authorities, the incident happened at 24th and Commercial Street just before 6:30 p.m. Police say the pair were riding Bird scooters west in between two sets of tracks. When a trolley came up behind they pair, they bumped into the side of one of the trolley cars. Both were taken to the hospital. Emergency crews said the woman only suffered minor injuries while the man had "more severe" injuries.  585

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A heat advisory went into effect Saturday morning for a large swath of San Diego County as temperatures are expected to soar this weekend.According to the National Weather Service, the advisory started at 10 a.m. and lasts through 8 p.m. Sunday. The agency says temperatures in the San Diego County mountains are expected to reach up to 100 degrees.Further east, an excessive heat warning also went into effect at 10 a.m. Saturday through 8 p.m. Monday for the San Diego County deserts. Forecasters say temperatures there could reach 114 to 118 degrees in the deserts.RELATED: Check your local forecastBy 1 p.m. Saturday, Ramona reached 101 degrees, passing a previous record of 100 set in 1983, according to the National Weather Service. At the same time, Escondido had reached 98 degrees and El Cajon had hit 99 degrees.“Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” the NWS said.Meanwhile, temperatures along the coast are set to reach into the low to mid-80s both Saturday and Sunday.A slight cooling trend is expected to finally work its way across the region on Tuesday and continue through Thursday. 1243
