Preflight COVID-19 testing is starting to become an option to avoid doing a 14-day quarantine when you get to your final destination.Starting November 1, you'll be allowed to travel to Costa Rica from the United States if you get a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of leaving the U.S.The Bahamas is taking it a step further. Starting November 1, you can travel there if you get a negative PCR test 7 days before your trip. Then, you'll have to get a rapid antigen test when you get there and four-days later.Hawaii lifted its 14-day quarantine last week for people who have a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the flight.“Having these alternatives to quarantine related to travel creates some confusion about what a test really means in the context of quarantine, so I worry a little bit that we're losing that message that a test is only just a moment in time,” said Dr. Shira Doron, an infectious disease physician at Tufts Medical Center.Doron says because of the incubation period for COVID-19, you can have it any time between 2 and 14 days after you're exposed. A negative result is only at the time you took the test.Recent studies have shown your risk of contracting the coronavirus on your flight is very low if strict mask wearing is followed.“I think, you know, the bigger issue is an influx of people incubating COVID-19 into an island that may have done a really good job controlling the pandemic and on the flip side really needs that tourist revenue,” said Doron.She says places like the Bahamas that require multiple tests is more effective.It could be a challenge to get that test before you leave. Doron says many hospitals stopped doing pre-and-post travel testing because of a lack of supplies.The turnaround time on getting the test is also an issue. (KGTV) — A Poway woman is taking legal action against the city after she says she fell ill from drinking contaminated water.The city on Nov. 30 issued a precautionary boil advisory after residents reported brownish water coming from their faucets. Poway officials reported that a storm drain backed up into a clear well, and said they issued the boil advisory in an abundance of caution. The advisory lasted about a week and was lifted Dec. 6. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Hurricane Marco is heading across the Gulf of Mexico on a path toward the Louisiana coast.Tropical Storm Laura battered the Dominican Republic and Haiti and is headed to the same part of the U.S. coast, also as a potential hurricane. On Sunday, President Donald Trump said his administration was closely monitoring both hurricanes and that they had FEMA lined up and the Coast Guard ready to go. Trump added that he had approved emergency declarations for Puerto Rico as well as Louisiana.It appears the storms will avoid being hurricanes simultaneously — something that researchers say has never happened in the Gulf of Mexico at least since records began being kept in 1900. The National Hurricane Center says Marco was about 240 miles (390 kilometers) south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River late Sunday afternoon. PORTLAND, Ore. — A peaceful protest morphed into an intense early morning confrontation between demonstrators and law enforcement in Oregon's largest city.U.S. agents fired what appeared to be tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls early Monday to clear a mass of protesters outside the federal courthouse in Portland.Some protesters had climbed over the fence surrounding the courthouse. Others shot fireworks, banged on the fence and projected lights on the building.The city has seen nightly protests for about 60 straight days since the death of George Floyd.The Monday morning scene in Portland has become the norm in the city in recent days. Authorities declared a riot in the are of the courthouse on early Sunday morning as some protests breached a gate surrounding the building. The Associated Press reported that six people were arrested.Later on Sunday, Portland police say a person was shot at a park near where the protests take place. Two people were taken into custody in connection with the incident but later released. The person who was shot was later treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Portland police also reported Sunday that a bag was found at the same park that contained loaded rifle magazines and Molotov cocktails. It's unclear if the items were related to the protests, and police say the items are not connected with Sunday's shootings.Though protests have continued for weeks in Portland, they've escalated in the past week since the arrival of federal agents. The agents were sent to Portland as part of a directive from President Donald Trump and Acting Sec. of Homeland Security Chad Wolf to prevent the defacement of monuments, statues and federal property.However, both Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler have said they do not welcome the presence of the agents and have asked the Trump administration to order their removal.
