We already know that 60 percent of the world population live in cities, the figure rises almost all the time. BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday vowed to comprehensively upgrade its friendly and cooperative relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE)."China attaches great importance to the development of its ties with the UAE and would like to further deepen cooperation in trade, energy, infrastructure construction, culture and law enforcement," said senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang in meeting with Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed al-Nahyan, national security advisor of the UAE in Beijing Thursday.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the 26 years since China and the UAE forged diplomatic ties has seen significant development in bilateral relations, with frequent high-level visits, deepening political mutual trust and fruitful pragmatic cooperation.The UAE has been China's second largest trading partner in the Arab world for five consecutive years and is the nation in the Middle East where China sends most commercial and labor service personnel, Zhou said.China highly appreciates the UAE government's support on the issues related to Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang, he said.Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed al-Nahyan conveyed a message from UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan to Zhou, saying that the UAE is willing to work with China to promote continuous development of bilateral ties.The security advisor added that he would like to actively enhance UAE-China security cooperation in anti-terrorism.

NANJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Zhu Yongxiang, a 72-year-old Chinese communist, pondered and cast his ballot to vote for the village communist party chief in the first direct election held in his village Houcong earlier this month."This is real democracy since party members' votes decide who the winner is instead of nominations and appointments," said Zhu, a villager with 50 years of membership in the Chinese Communist Party (CPC).He gave his support to Chen Jiagui in the election for party secretary in Houcong Village in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.Chen beat his rival 121 to 32 votes in the election observed by 200 party members, some of whom came to the event with mud still on their shoes, fresh from work in the fields.From April to June, similar direct elections were run in 806 villages in Nanjing, where CPC committees in 363 neighborhoods in urban areas have piloted general elections for grassroots leaders since last year."The CPC has been the ruling party for over 60 years, since New China was founded in 1949. XIANGNING, Shanxi, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The water level dropped Tuesday in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, where 153 people were trapped, as rescue efforts entered the third day.But there was still no communication with the trapped although almost 1,000 rescuers have been racing the clock to pump out water and trying to reach them.By 6 p.m. Tuesday, the water level in the shaft had dropped by 15 cm, and a total of 15,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out of the pit, the rescue headquarters said late Tuesday.Rescuers send drainage pipes down to the shaft at the site of the flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, north China's Shanxi Province, on March 30, 2010.Currently, six pumps are being used to pump up to 645 cubic meters of water per hour.Altogether 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine, which was under construction, when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Although 108 were lifted safely to the ground, 153 others were trapped in the shaft.The mine, which straddles Xiangning County, of Linfen City, and Hejin City, of Yuncheng City, covers about 180 square kilometers.The mining zone was estimated to have more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves, including 1.04 billion tonnes of proven reserves, according to the company's official website.The mine, affiliated with the state-owned Huajin Coking Coal Co. Ltd., is a major project approved by the provincial government. It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.
