LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - Supporters of a sales tax increase in Lemon Grove plan to gather signatures for the final time this weekend in hopes of qualifying a ballot measure that they say is needed to save the city from disincorporation.Facing gloomy revenue projections in a city with the lowest sales tax rate in the county, supporters want to put a three-quarter cent increase before voters on the March ballot.Without the hike, the city might be forced to dissolve into the county, which would take possession of city assets and likely sell City Hall, said councilman Jerry Jones."We've done all the cuts that we can do," he said. "We're in worse shape than we were 10 years ago."The city spends roughly 80 percent of its budget on public safety, leaving little for infrastructure and other programs like addressing homelessness, Jones said.The tax hike would generate 3 million dollars, raising the city's total sales tax revenue by 38 percent, he said.At the Grove Grinder restaurant, business owner Sharon Jones is skeptical of the doomsday scenario."I think it's just a scare tactic," she said.She thinks the city should help its business community grow, and says raising the sales tax might do just the opposite."There are more businesses closing down here in lemon grove. (KGTV) - People who live on Louisa Drive in La Mesa say they're living in fear every day because of a rise in crime connected to two homes they suspect are drug houses.The residents are asking the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to increase patrols in their neighborhood and do more to enforce the law at those homes."I have kids, and it's just not a safe place anymore," said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous because that person fears retaliation from neighbors. "You never know what's going to happen."According to one sergeant from the Rancho San Diego sheriff's substation, there are two homes on Louisa Drive that have people living in them with a criminal history. Right now, deputies are investigating those homes to see if any criminal activity is going on.The sergeant says there are other homes around the corner from Louisa Drive that are also under investigation.A search of crimemapping.com shows seven reported crimes in the last six months on Louisa Drive, most of them drug-related. Last January, 10News reported on one woman on the street who woke up to a pair of strange men standing in her bedroom."The concept of someone in your house while you're sleeping, it's startling," said her daughter, who also found her room ransacked.Neighbors also complain of people passed out in the street, walking through their yards at all hours of the day and night, and leaving garbage in their yards.The sheriff's department says people can file requests for extra patrol at certain hours. They try to accommodate those requests depending on staffing levels and other, more urgent calls. (WFTS) - An 85-year-old man was bitten by an alligator at a Florida retirement community, the Florida Wildlife Commission said.The incident happened at the Cypress Lakes Retirement Community in Lakeland Monday afternoon.The man was reportedly bitten on the foot and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. The extent of his injuries are unknown.Sheriff’s deputies called a wildlife trapper, who removed the gator. Experts estimated its size at 9’9”.Jane Rickel, who lives nearby, said trappers found the man’s white sneaker in the gator’s mouth.“His wife heard him screaming supposedly. And I guess his neighbor came to his rescue. There isn’t a pond in here that doesn’t have alligators,” Rickel said.The retirement community posted on its Facebook page about the incident and reminded residents about safety around alligators. 855
