SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With a global pandemic and calls for social justice and equity, 2020 was a year full of change. We all were required to think quickly and adapt. It forced us to think long and hard about our values and what we can – and are called to – do, as organizations and individuals. What has the impact been on our careers and long-term plans? How have organizations changed how and who they hire? Are new skill sets in demand? Is there a more thoughtful approach to diversity and inclusion? And what about our young people – are they rethinking their plans, and what they imagine for their lives and careers? Our featured speakers this week include executive coach Azadeh Davari, executive recruiter Trevor Blair, and Reality Changers CEO Tamara Craver. The conversation will be moderated by LEAD Vice President Elizabeth Fitzsimons.WHEN: December 9 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pmJOIN VIA ZOOM: https://sdchamber.org/event/webinar-series-leading-in-a-new-reality-7/WATCH ON FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ABC10News/ 1025

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Whether you're into cars, fashion, history, or current events, you could find it in a magazine at Paras News. Now the beloved North Park newsstand is closing down after 70 years."For a lot of people, they're here every day. It's their mainstay," said Ken Gabbara, owner of Paras News for the last 11 years. Health concerns are just one of the reasons he's letting the iconic shop go. RELATED: Several popular San Diego restaurants to close after CEO accused in 0 million fraud scheme"The Internet has worn us down because they're bigger and stronger than us. You can't compete with something they give away for free for the most part," said Gabbara. At one time, they sold over 4,000 types of magazines, but with less published nowadays, that number dropped to 2,500.Longtime customers are sad to see the neighborhood establishment go. "It's going to be missed, it's really going to be missed," said Sharon Maynard, a customer of 35 years.Maynard fell in love with the literary and poetry magazines. "Now they just go online, but for me, there's nothing better than having it in your hand in print," said Maynard. Also sad to see the newsstand go is manager Kent Snyder, who's worked at Paras for 33 years. RELATED: Restaurant closures highlight industry struggles in San Diego"We made an effort to bring stuff into the store that other places don't carry, when they asked for it I ordered it," Snyder.Employees invite the community to buy one more magazine, so they have something of Paras News to hold onto. "We're one of a kind," said Gabbara. Paras News will remain open until the end of December. 1630

The two worked together on homeowner issues and through the last ten years, have become friends. Atkins said she remembers various phone calls from Harris through the years, ranging from Harris asking for support during her run for U.S. Senate, to asking for her support in a run for the presidency. Atkins said one of her favorite calls was on her birthday.RELATED: What happens to Kamala Harris's Senate seat?“I keep playing my birthday message from her. Aug. 1, I got a birthday message from my U.S. Senator, the Vice Presidential candidate, singing me happy birthday. I think that’s increased in value significantly,” she said, laughing.Atkins said Harris holds herself with poise and warmth during speeches and in the public eye, and that’s exactly how she is in person as well. She added that she expects Harris to face obstacles in the White House for various reasons ranging from being a woman to being a minority, but those are the qualities that maker her strong.“This is one of those moments where it is about time and she is so qualified, she is so ready, she is so qualified for this role and this job and to be on this stage,” said Atkins.RELATED: Kamala Harris becomes first Black woman, South Asian elected Vice PresidentAtkins said those traits have already started inspiring others to follow her lead.“To see the faces of women and young girls and people of color again say 'our voices matter,' it was quite something,” she said. 1789
