Retailers pulled some name brand dog food from store shelves after a euthanasia drug was found in several products."I was a little surprised, but at the same time you hear all sorts of stuff about what is and what isn't in dog food," said Sam Porach, pet owner.The FDA started an investigation after a TV station tested several cans of Gravy Train dog food and found 60 percent contained pentobarbital, a drug used to euthanize animals, found in some products."It's a tranquilizing drug that is sometimes used by veterinarians in animal shelters to reduce anxiety in animals and ultimately put them to sleep," said Jackie Bowen, the executive director of Clean Label Project.The Clean Label Project is a non-profit aimed at educating people about toxins in products, including pet food."This industry needs to do a lot more testing and be a lot more critical of the ingredients used in its products," said Bowen.The J.M. Smucker Co. owns the brands in question including Gravy Train, Kibble 'N Bits, Skippy and Ol' Roy.  The company is investigating how pentobarbital got into the supply chain."One possible way is through contaminated ingredients," Bowen said.Between recalls and reading labels, pet owners are left trying to navigate what's really safe."Try to go all natural type yah know baked treats and stuff," pet owner Ryan Searle said."I feel like there's been a pretty big movement lately on knowing what's in your dogs' food and having higher quality foods," Porach said.Smucker's said the low level of the drug found in the food does not pose a threat to pets, but admit it's not acceptable. Ride-hailing company Uber is offering people free and discounted rides if they need a lift to and from a COVID-19 vaccination appointment.In a press release, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company offers 10 million free or discounted rides to ensure people get vaccinated, especially those who face a barrier getting there.Khosrowshahi said they are partnering with the National Urban League, the Morehouse School of Medicine, and the National Action Network because the organizations are tied to communities of color that have been "disproportionately hurt by the pandemic."A date when this is to kickoff has not been announced. 637

(AP) — A man charged with killing a rookie California police officer made his first brief court appearance Monday wearing a four-inch gauze pad covering what officials said was a self-inflicted injury.Adel Sambrano Ramos was appointed a public defender during a five-minute court hearing, and spoke only to acknowledge his name.Ramos, 45, faces a murder charge that could bring him the death penalty in Wednesday's slaying of 26-year-old Sacramento Officer Tara O'Sullivan. He's also charged with attempting to murder her training officer and with possessing two illegal assault-style rifles.He did not enter a plea.Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Rod Norgaard defended police from criticism that they took 45 minutes to rescue O'Sullivan with an armored vehicle because they were pinned down by rifle fire that could penetrate standard bulletproof vests."There was nothing that could have been done to save her life," he said after the hearing. "The nature of that injury is such that it could happen in an emergency room and she would not be save-able. So I find it very disheartening that people are criticizing the police response time to evacuate her. That has no merit whatsoever."He also took exception to questions of whether O'Sullivan was properly trained."Nothing in the training or lack thereof is the cause of this," he said. "There is an individual responsible for this, not law enforcement."Assistant Public Defender Diane Howard declined comment, as did Police Chief Daniel Hahn, who sat quietly in the back of the courtroom. Jerry Brown has sworn in former top adviser Joshua Groban to the state Supreme Court in what aides say is likely to be his final public appearance before leaving office next week.Brown has now placed four justices on the seven-member court. The Democratic governor said Thursday that it cannot be considered a "Brown court" because each justice acts independently, sometimes unpredictably.The 45-year-old Groban, of Los Angeles, oversaw Brown's appointment of about 600 judges since 2011.He gives the court a majority of Democratic appointees for the first time since 1986.
