A Michigan hospital is facing a federal lawsuit alleging racial discrimination by a nurse who says she was told not to care for a patient because of her race.Teoka Williams works as a Registered Nurse at Beaumont Health's campus in Dearborn. Her lawsuit alleges that while working on the unit on Oct. 2, she overheard a patient say she did not want a "Black B****" taking care of her.Williams claims she told the clinical manager about the comment and that clinical manager then talked to the patient, who told her she did not want Williams to care for her.The clinical manager then allegedly told the patient that she would "move" Williams and that the patient would not have to see her anymore. The clinical manager then told Williams she was not to go into the patient's room and if either patient in the room needed care a white nurse named Olivia was required to go into the room, according to the suitThe lawsuit alleges that there were times when the patients in the room needed care and Williams was forbidden from doing so because of her race.Williams' lawsuit contends that she told Human Resources about the incident and was told that patient requests are honored all the time and that the next time it happened, she would be taken off the assignment altogether. The lawsuit contends Beaumont violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. It is asking for compensatory and punitive damages, as well as court costs and attorney fees, as well as any other relief that Williams may be entitled under the law.Beaumont Health issued the following statement: 1647

A recent string of extremist attacks highlights an alarming trend: a growing number of hate crimes across the country. In fact, it’s up for the fourth year in a row in most major cities, according to Brian Levin, who studies hate crimes. Levin says one possible reason for the most recent spike of attacks is the midterm elections.“We're a very polarized society,” says Levin, who works at the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. “We're not only divided, but we're entrenched in that division.”Experts say hotly contested political races can cause a jump in hate crimes. It happened around the 2016 presidential election.“November of that year was the worst month of 14 years, going back to the first anniversary of 9/11,” Levin says.Just this week, attorneys for three men accused of planning to bomb a mosque the day after Donald Trump became president say his rhetoric during the campaign inspired the men.Now that he's president, others worry his words could motivate others. At a recent rally, President Trump stated, “You know what? I am; I'm a nationalist, okay.“But you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides.”Professor Carolyn Gallaher at American University believes this rhetoric has consequences.“In white supremacist circles, they took this to mean this person supports us and we have a champion in the White House and we can fight for a white America.”The president and his administration deny he intentionally incites violence. 1475

A man wanted in connection with a quadruple murder in Detroit has shot himself, according to police. George Anthony Davis, 27, shot himself near the Ohio Turnpike after leading police on a chase.Police said Davis shot and killed three people, a man and two women, at a gas station iin Detroit Monday morning. The male victim was identified as Deacon Ralphael Hall, leader at a local church, his 26-year-old daughter Cierra Bargineer and 21-year-old Kristen Thomas.Police say surveillance cameras captured everything; a man pulled up in a silver sedan and started talking to people in a gray Dodge SUV. Seconds later, the man in the sedan shot the people in the SUV and shot at the man pumping gas. When he ran out of bullets, he went back to his car to reload, and came back to shoot more. Police say Bargineer was the mother of his child.Second Shooting LocationHe then gets in the car and goes to Faust Street and has a conversation with an adult male cousin and fatally shoots him, police said.  The suspect then goes to a gas station on Faust and takes a 2007 blue Nissan Ultima.Davis was on the run for several hours before police confirmed that he shot himself. A popular New Jersey restaurant is drawing criticism for a policy making underage customers pay an 18 percent tip for their order, the New York Post reported. The Wayne Hills Diner in Wayne, New Jersey is reportedly a popular spot for teenagers and children after school, but its management says that children don't always tip. That is why it has enforced a policy adding gratuity to underage customers, but not adults."My employees need to get paid. They don't work for free," the restaurant's manager told the Post. The restaurant says it is not trying to scare off young customers. "We love the kids. They've been coming for years. We're a family-owned business," the manager told the New York post. "There's too much publicity for nothing. But some parents think it is unfair to make children tip, while not making adults add gratuity."I was angry because I had been there the week before and I had been there with a group of five, some kids and some children, and I was not charged this gratuity," long-time customer Melissa Desch told WABC-TV.Desch said that her 11-year-old daughter spotted the added gratuity after she got her receipt. "He said that's policy because the kids run out and he feels that they don't tip well, and they don't know how to tip was the explanation," she told WABC. "I said I could understand that, but again, they're not being given the option, they're being forced to pay them." 1445
