BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, said in an editorial that the Shanghai World Expo provided the world with an opportunity to weigh the future at a time when mankind is faced with serious challenges.The editorial, to be carried by the newspaper on Monday, bid farewell to the the 184-day Expo which lowered the curtain on Sunday.The editorial reads, industrial civilization is a double-edged sword, enriching modern lives and bringing challenges at the same time, such as environmental degradation and rapid urbanization, and the Shanghai World Expo made people stop and think about the future.The Shanghai Expo made history, registering over 73 million visitors and 246 participating countries, regions and international organizations, the editorial says.The editorial reads, the Shanghai World Expo is the first exhibition whose theme focused on the city. Though the expo is ending, people's hopes and expectations, pinned on cities, will endure, as will the efforts the international community makes in reaching common ground in a diversified world amidst the concept of sustainable and low-carbon development.

ANKARA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Ankara on Thursday night for a three-day official visit to Turkey.Turkey is the last leg of Wen's four-nation tour, which has taken him to Greece, Belgium and Italy. CAIRO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Egyptian industry officials vowed closer bilateral economic ties on Sunday with the signing of an industrial cooperation agreement.Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid met with Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong. Both talked about the expansion and improvement of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.Rachid told reporters that he hoped the new agreement would pave the way for more cooperation in different industry sectors including manufacturing of cars components, textiles, petrochemicals, electronics and technology."This agreement includes the process of sharing technology and increasing investment in the industrial sector and training of workers as well as helping Egyptian companies promote their products in the Chinese markets," said the Egyptian minister.The agreement also included the formation of an Egyptian- Chinese task force that takes the responsibility of sharing information and experiments in the industrial sectors and encouraging Egyptian and Chinese firms to establish joint ventures in different areas of cooperation, according to Rachid.Rachid said that Egypt wanted to benefit from the successful Chinese experience in the industrial sector.Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif also met with the Chinese minister. The prime minister said Egypt shows great interest in boosting cooperation with China.The bilateral trade between Egypt and China increased from 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2006 to 6.24 billion dollars in 2008, according to Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Wu Chunhua.By the end of last year, Chinese investment in Egypt exceeded 500 million U.S. dollars. Chinese auto companies such as Chery Automobile and Brilliance Automobile have had assembly lines here in Egypt.Rachid expected that the Egyptian-Chinese cooperation would witness a great milestone in all sectors, particularly the trade and industry relations thanks to exchanges in the economic and political levels.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States Monday underscored their close economic relationship and called for its healthy growth."China and the United States share very close economic ties," Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan told a U.S. delegation led by two Missouri senators - Christopher Bond and Claire McCaskill.Wang said bilateral cooperation in trade, economy, investment and finance generate substantial benefits for both peoples."Both sides should work together to create a sound environment for a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship in the 21st century," Wang said.Bond and McCaskill echoed Wang's comments, calling on the two countries to oppose trade protectionism.On global economy, Wang said the recovery of the global economy would be bumpy."All countries are confronted with the common challenge of seeking robust, sustainable and balanced economic growth."Wang also said the Chinese government would "make efforts to strike a balance between maintaining steady and fast economic growth with the restructuring of the economy and the curbing of inflation."The two senators are leading a delegation of nearly 20 leaders from a variety of Missouri businesses, trade unions and universities.During their stay in Beijing, the delegation will meet with officials from the commerce, foreign affairs, civil aviation and agriculture departments.They will also travel to Shanghai on east China's seaboard, where they will call on local officials and tour the ongoing World Expo.

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Friday called for greater efforts to transform China from a country with a large population into one rich in human resources."It is the 'key' to building a moderately well-off society in all respects and for modernization," said Zhang at the opening ceremony of a forum on human resource development in Beijing.He said China must uphold the principle of respecting labor, knowledge, talent and creation, and continue the strategy of building a stronger country by developing human resources.The forum was organized by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security as some 570 people from the government, higher-learning institutions and business attended the event.
