SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The boy who was critically injured in a crash in San Ysidro joined his parents Friday outside the courthouse where the alleged driver is on trial.Prosecutors said Constantino Banda Acosta, an undocumented immigrant, was drunk May 6 when he hit the Lake family on their way home from Disneyland.Lennox Lake was hospitalized for 18 days with multiple skull fractures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of Rebecca Zahau testified Thursday in the second day of the civil lawsuit surrounding the Coronado mansion death.Rebecca Zahau died in July 2011. Her nude, bound body was found hanging from the balcony of the Spreckels mansion.The death was officially declared a suicide but Zahau's family disagreed. They filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau's boyfriend.Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is no physical, eyewitness, or scientific evidence linking him to Zahau’s death.Zahau's mother, Pari Zahau, took the witness stand Thursday morning and gave an emotional testimony as she was asked questions about her daughter.She remembered her as a sweet, loving and religious woman. The jury has three days off and will hear testimony again Monday.The family’s attorney Keith Greer handed Pari Zahau a piece of evidence and asked her to describe what it was.It was an envelope full of cash from Rebecca Zahau addressed to Pari Zahau and her late husband.Pari Zahau explained to the jury her daughter would support her financially by sending cash every month. That envelope was never sent, although one of the final times Pari Zahau talked to her daughter, she was told it would be on the way soon.Pari Zahau had to take a break from testifying when lawyer Keith Greer asked, “Did you ever think Rebecca would kill herself?”She gave a tearful response saying, “No. No, never. Never. My daughter? No. She is very sweet girl and she is very strong. No no, not suicide, they killed her.”After Pari Zahau broke down in tears, the lawyer asked for a brief break.The trial is expected to last a month. The Zahau’s family’s goal is to get the Sheriff’s Department to reopen a criminal investigation. 1802

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The attorney for Rebecca Zahau’s family spoke Friday about the San Diego County Sheriff Department’s new review of her death at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado.Earlier in the day, Sheriff Bill Gore announced that investigators found no evidence that she “died at the hands of another”. The department will not reopen the case.Zahau’s body was found hanging a the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011. Her wrists and feet were bound. For years, there has been speculation about the nature of her death, which was originally determined to be a suicide.Zahau family attorney Keith Greer suggested Friday afternoon that the Sheriff’s investigators are corrupt. “It’s not a logical decision. There’s something here that’s motivating these folks to do the wrong thing,” he told 10News. “I don’t know how they look at themselves in the mirror,” he added. Greer said that a rational person would not look at the evidence and believe that Zahau’s death was a suicide. The Zahau family lives in Missouri and did not want to be involved in Friday’s briefing at the Sheriff’s Department. They did release a recent photo of Zahau’s gravesite, surrounded by snow and flowers.Greer said he and the family are disappointed in the Sheriff’s Department, especially after a jury recently ruled in the family’s favor during the civil case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday morning's rain caused crashes on roadways, damage to construction zones and danger in Sunset Cliffs.One of those crashes had Cristal Ramirez in the passenger seat. "I was supposed to drive for brunch but my friend picked us up and I was glad because I didn't want to drive in the rain," she said.She said as they took the connector from the 163 to the I-8 West they started sliding, "I think we were driving a little too fast because of the rain." Ramirez said they grazed the guardrail. The tires were out of alignment, making it necessary to call for a tow truck."We were like what the heck this is wild!" She said.The group didn't let the accident ruin their afternoon, they continued on in Ramirez's car to Sunset Cliffs.The danger still lurking behind yellow caution tape, draped along the edge of one part of the cliff. From where she and her two friends stood, you could see the cliff carved away underneath the seemingly solid edge."I didn't think about it, I was like 'Oh we're close to the edge.' and we started playing around and I was like, 'Oh we probably shouldn't be playing this close to the edge," Ramirez said when she realized the danger.South of Sunset Cliffs, another problem at the Silver Strand State Beach exit off SR 75. The rain caused metal plates covering trenches in a construction area to bend inward.Crews rushed out to reinforce the plates to make them safe, adding wood supports. An engineer told 10News the construction should be finished by next week, if the weather doesn't delay the work. 1559

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The downtown building at 101 Ash Street has been sitting vacant for most of the last four years and as it continues to sit empty, taxpayers are footing the ,000 per day bill.City Council leaders voted 5-4 — with Council members Vivian Moreno, Monica Montgomery, Barbara Bry, and Georgette Gómezto voting in opposition — to request monthly updates on the building's status and costs for several options presented by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office.The mayor's options included putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursue a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely, the last of which could risk litigation and credit damage.The coronavirus pandemic has cleared out office buildings across downtown San Diego. But emptiness is business as usual for the old Sempra building at 101 Ash.In 2016, the city approved a lease-to-own agreement for the building, valued at million. The idea was to move upwards of 1,100 city employees into the facility.But officials quickly discovered a series of problems requiring major renovations to the site's 19 floors.In December 2019, the city finally began moving workers into the building, only to vacate them a month later when the county found traces of asbestos.So how did the city get into this mess? A new investigation shows it really never did its homework for such a big purchase from the start.The law firm Hugo Parker found that, "at no time, however, did the city formally inspect 101 Ash before closing escrow."In January, councilmember Barbara Bry showed ABC 10News a document that the city accepted the property as is."That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said.An additional new report from Kitchell says the building needs 5 million of repairs, which is well more than what the city paid for it. 1947
