LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The state's Franchise Tax Board announced Thursday new tax-filing relief for people affected by wildfires that broke out in San Diego County and other counties throughout the state in September.Taxpayers in areas that were declared disaster areas by Gov. Gavin Newsom are granted an extension until Jan. 15 to file California tax returns on 2019 income and make any tax payments that would have been due between Sept. 4 and Jan. 15."With more time to file and make certain payments, we hope to provide some relief to families and workers affected by these devastating wildfires," State Controller and FTB chair Betty T. Yee said in a statement.The relief applies to various upcoming tax-filing deadlines including:-- individual filers whose previous tax-filing extension was set to end Oct. 15. Any tax payments associated with the filings are not eligible for relief since they were initially due July 15-- business entities with a due date between September and Dec. 15-- quarterly tax payments due Sept. 15Wildfire victims may also claim a deduction on their 2019 income tax returns or next year's returns for a disaster loss sustained in an area proclaimed by the governor to be in a state of emergency, according to the Franchise Tax Board, which noted that those who have already filed tax returns this year can file an amended return.Taxpayers should write the name of the fire in blue or black ink at the top of their tax returns to alert the Franchise Tax Board. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) – Two children inside an RV involved in an hours-long chase and standoff with a domestic violence suspect were safely recovered Tuesday night, authorities reported. The children in the vehicle are said to be 11-months-old and 3-years-old. Authorities are still searching for the suspect. The driver of the RV was involved in another pursuit in Santa Clarita that was canceled for safety concerns Tuesday, KABC reported.The chase started on surface streets but the suspect later entered the 101 Freeway followed by the 170.The suspect drove at normal speeds between 60 and 70 miles per hour. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The popular grocery chain Trader Joe's says it won't be changing ethnic-sounding labels on its line of Mexican, Chinese and other international foods, adding they are not racist. Earlier this month the company said it was looking at changing some labels. But now it says it has no problem with ethnic-food labels like Trader Jose's, Trader Ming's and Arabian Joe. "Decades ago, our Buying Team started using product names, like Trader Giotto’s, Trader José’s, Trader Ming’s, etc. We thought then—and still do—that this naming of products could be fun and show appreciation for other cultures," a press release from the company reads.The company says they were created years ago in a lighthearted effort to promote inclusion and that customers still like them. "We continue our ongoing evaluation, and those products that resonate with our customers and sell well will remain on our shelves," the company said. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell and the city's Bureau of Sanitation will remind all restaurant managers that starting Tuesday they will be required to withhold plastic straws unless a customer requests them. ``The new city law picks up where the state law stops,'' O'Farrell said in April. ``As a coastal city and state, we owe it to our environment to do everything in our power to ensure we reduce single-use plastic waste.'' The first phase of O'Farrell's ``Straws on Request'' initiative took effect this year on Earth Day, which applied to businesses with more than 26 employees. The new law takes aim at reducing single-use plastic waste from littering beaches and waterways, O'Farrell said, and it applies to restaurants of all sizes. O'Farrell plans to speak this morning at a news conference with various city officials and local restaurant owners. Both the state and county recently adopted a single-use plastic straw policy, but O'Farrell said Los Angeles' law is more restrictive. In drive-thru restaurants, the customer will be notified to ask for a straw if one is needed. O'Farrell cited a report from the nonprofit Lonely Whale's campaign called Strawless Ocean, which stated Americans throw away 500 million plastic straws each day. (KGTV) -- The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department identified the scuba diver found dead nine miles off the coast of Long Beach on the ocean floor as Henry Cook, 55, of La Jolla.Cook was scuba diving near an oil platform Saturday afternoon with another diver when something went wrong.Deputies got a "diver in distress" call 12:30 p.m. Saturday near oil platform Elly.A Los Angeles Sheriff’s helicopter responded and hoisted a scuba diver out of a Lifeguard boat, then flew the diver to Catalina Island and was treated in a hyperbaric chamber.Sunday, searchers returned to the area with a remote-controlled underwater robot and located Cook’s body on the ocean floor 200-feet down.Los Angeles County is conducting an autopsy to determine how Cook died. 780
