LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Sheriff Alex Villanueva Tuesday said a weekend raid of "a massive underground party" at a vacant Palmdale residence -- despite health restrictions against large gatherings and a statewide curfew in place due to the coronavirus pandemic -- led to 158 arrests and the rescue of a 17- year-old victim of human trafficking.The Saturday night party in the 6300 block of West Avenue M-8 was allegedly organized by a teen promoter who was one of the people arrested when sheriff's deputies descended on the event, Villanueva said."Parties like these often involve drugs, prostitution, underage drinking and violence," Villanueva said at a news conference Tuesday morning outside the Hall of Justice, where he announced the 158 arrests as well as the rescue of the human trafficking victim and the recovery of six firearms from the location."We were able to rescue a girl who was present and categorized as a commercially sexually exploited child," Villanueva said.Involved in the law enforcement operation were personnel from the sheriff's Palmdale Station, the Human Trafficking Task Force, Operation Safe Streets Bureau, Aero Bureau, three mobile field forces and Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.According to Fox11, which had been tracking the 17-year-old promoter's alleged activities and was on scene when the raid occurred, 116 adults were cited and released for various misdemeanor offenses, while seven people were booked into jail. Another 35 juveniles were also cited and released. The arrests included three adults and two juveniles booked on suspicion of burglary, while one juvenile was arrested on a gun charge, the station reported.When stricter health orders were announced last week, including plans for the state's regional stay-at-home order that took effect late Sunday night, Villanueva said his department would continue to rely on the public's adherence to restrictions."Since March, we have continued to focus on education and voluntary compliance regarding health orders," he wrote on Twitter. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Warning again that holiday gatherings can lead to spikes in coronavirus cases, Los Angeles County's public health director said Wednesday residents should begin planning safer ways to celebrate upcoming fall holidays, but the county backed down from its previously announced ban on trick-or-treating for Halloween."Our guidelines have been slightly revised, so we'd ask that people go back and look at them to distinguish between those activities that are not permitted by the health officer order -- that includes events, gatherings parties -- those are just not allowed," Barbara Ferrer said. "They're not allowed for anything. ... The only activities you can have a party or gathering for are with those people that are in your household."On Tuesday, the Department of Public Health posted Halloween guidelines on its website stating that door-to-door trick-or-treating is banned under the county health order, as is "trunk-to-trunk" treat distribution, in which children take candy from trunks of parked cars. By Wednesday, however, the guidelines were changed, with trick-or-treating listed as "not recommended," instead of "not permitted."Despite that change, Ferrer still insisted that allowing children to go door-to-door during the coronavirus pandemic isn't safe."Trick-or-treating, we're highly recommending that it not happen," she said. "We don't think it's an appropriate activity during a pandemic. ... You know, there's no guarantee when you go trick-or-treating that your child goes up to a house where the person who opens the door is wearing a face covering. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three Los Angeles police officers have been charged with falsifying records reporting that people they stopped were gang members or associates. Prosecutors say the members of the Police Department's Metropolitan Division were charged with conspiracy in a 59-count complaint with obstructing justice and multiple counts of filing a false police report and preparing false evidence. In a news release, the LA County DA's office said Braxton Shaw, Michael Coblentz, and Nicholas Martinez are the officers being charged.Prosecutors said in the statement that the officers are accused of falsifying field interview cards they use to conduct interviews while out on duty.The cards, prosecutors say, contained false information and misidentified dozens of people as a gang member.The officers' union said Friday it expects the department to ensure the officers are accorded their due process rights and that any proven mischaracterizations are corrected.The Police Department says 21 additional officers are under investigation.
