SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Sisu Academy, a free boarding school for at-risk teenage girls, needs help to get the school year started."We are a little cash strapped right now," says school founder Jabez Labret. "We need to get some cash in the door to get over the starting line so we can access those grant dollars coming this fall to keep the program running."Labret says the school has plenty of money lined up in grants and in-kind donations once classes begin, they need some bridge funding until then.He says the school's mission makes it a worthy cause for donations."This is more than just another school," Labret says. "This is truly about changing these girls' lives."The school will enroll 20 girls this fall, all of them from at-risk situations. They hope to add a freshman class each fall and eventually have 350 students."It could be drug or alcohol issues at home, domestic abuse, homelessness," he says. "It could be that mom and dad both work two jobs and are just struggling to be able to keep food on the table."Labret says a boarding school puts the girls in a stable, focused environment that will help them establish a foundation for the future."We don't just teach the academic side," he says. "We teach them social and emotional skills, the entrepreneurial side, we go out into the community and do community service. It gives us a lot of options to get out of the learning environment."One student who will enroll this fall says she's excited about the prospect."Going to school would help me so that I can get my mind off my troubles at home," says Analys Franklin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The remains of a Kansas Marine who fought in World War II have been identified.U.S. Marines Corps Reserve Pfc. Raymond Warren was killed in 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa, according to the Associated Press. After his burial site was discovered in 2015, his nephew, Warren Cooper, of San Diego, and niece submitted mouth swaps for DNA testing, The Wichita Eagle reported.This month, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Warren's remains were identified in part through DNA analysis.RELATED: Veterans honor 75th anniversary of Battle of Iwo JimaWarren was awarded the Silver Star after his death and is eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.“We figured that enormity of the sacrifice and the great honor it is to be buried at Arlington tipped that in the (direction) of him being buried there,” Cooper told the AP.According to the agency, Warren was part of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, where they faced Japanese troops on the island of Betio in the Gilbert Islands region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Attorney's Office of Southern California announced charges Friday against a man in the death of a Camp Pendleton Marine who had an overdose in his barracks.The unidentified Corporal was found unresponsive on the floor near his computer chair on January 29, 2017. He was wearing headphones and appeared to have been playing video games, investigators said.An autopsy determined the Marine died of fentanyl toxicity. A pill found on the headboard near a powdery substance and a rolled-up dollar bill tested positive for fentanyl.A complaint unsealed Friday detailed drug charges against 25-year-old Kyle Shephard of San Marcos.Investigators said Shephard met the victim in November 2016 and sold him fentanyl and other drugs multiple times over three months.Shepard acknowledged the pills could lead to an overdose, according to the complaint.In December, Shephard was arrested and charged with possessing for distribution roughly 2,000 fentanyl pills.“What a senseless tragedy that another young life has been lost because of fentanyl,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “This Marine was serving his country and had his whole life ahead of him. We are going to hold dealers accountable for the deaths that result from their reckless disregard for human life.”Shephard will be in court March 6 for a detention hearing.  1369

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people are in custody following a chase through North Park and University Heights Monday evening. The chase started around 5:30 p.m. at an unknown location after police tried to make contact with the suspects following a possible hit-and-run in a stolen vehicle. Mid-chase, officers called off the pursuit after it was determined the suspect was traveling too fast. At one point during the chase, two of the suspects could be seen jumping out of the vehicle near Florida Street and Polk Avenue. A third suspect was detained a short time later. Video from Sky10 shows at least one suspect leaping out of the car on the 3000 block of Palm Street before leaping into brush in a nearby canyon. 725
