SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Department of Homeland Security is responding to the caravan of Central American immigrants prepared to enter the United States through the border with Mexico.At least 600 people from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua are traveling to Tijuana, according to freelance journalist Jorge Nieto. About 100 arrived last night. Eventually the group will enter the U.S. at the San Ysidro port of entry.Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen released a statement on the caravan.“DHS continues to monitor the remnants of the ‘caravan’ of individuals headed to our Southern border with the apparent intention of entering the United States illegally. A sovereign nation that cannot – or worse, chooses not – to defend its borders will soon cease to be a sovereign nation. Anyone seeking asylum may be detained while their claims are processed, DHS said.“Again, if you enter the United States illegally, let me be clear: you have broken the law. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video shows a couple at a Kearny Mesa home, targeting an American flag.John Dodds bought his flag two years ago and displayed it with a light outside his home on Atlas Street."My father was a Navy veteran, my brother was very patriotic and instilled it within me," Dodds said. "I want everyone to know how much I appreciate this country and what the veterans of this country do for us."A flag typically flies in front of Dodd's home 365 days a year. On Thursday morning, Dodds walked outside and saw the empty flag holder, before reviewing his surveillance video.Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, two people with backpacks - bandanas on their faces -  walked by. One of them walked up to his porch and yanked out the flag before she took off. Dodds posted the video on the Nextdoor app in hopes of tracking down those thieves - and his flag.        "Maybe it was a big joke to them, but I don't think they know how seriously most of us take the flag of the United States of America," he said. Dodds plans on getting another flag but is still holding out hope for it to be returned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The final touches are going into Petco Park before Thursday's highly-anticipated opening day. But just a few blocks away from the stadium are the many faces of San Diego’s homeless crisis, where several resources and services are located. Homeless advocate Michael McConnell spends many early mornings on the streets of downtown, documenting police interactions with the homeless population. Since the Hepatitis A outbreak he’s seen the number of encampments go down, but say he's frustrated over the city’s response to fixing the problem. “I’m most frustrated that there's not a strategy that's solutions-focused, long term thinking about actually reducing homelessness versus reducing the visibility of homelessness," said McConnell. On Wednesday morning, one day before Padres Opening Day, McConnell captured several interactions with police and the homeless around Petco Park and East Village. He believes the enforcement is the city trying to push homeless people away from the stadium before thousands of people descend on downtown. “When we have to send out massive amounts of law enforcement to clear an area, to make things appear better, versus them actually being better, we know we failed," said McConnell.10News also spoke with several security guards in the area who say they witnessed more enforcement than usual. However, San Diego Police says the enforcement around East Village is unrelated to Opening Day and that no additional officers were sent to the area Wednesday morning. They say officers are in this area every day as it's one of their busiest sectors in the city. A representative tells 10News they respond to daily complaints from business and residents to address ongoing problems, including encampments, drug use, and other criminal activity.Since last summer they've responded to 5,000 of these complaints through the Get It Done app alone.The department says during each contact they always offer help to individuals. If assistance is denied they have a progressive enforcement model which begins with warnings. But McConnell says based on what he's witnessed day in and day out, he's not satisfied with this answer.“What we’ve done is we’ve moved a lot of people around, we don’t let encampments build up again, but the folks are still there, they haven’t disappeared," said McConnell. 10News reached out to the Mayor's Office and received this response: 2415

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man reported missing from a Spring Valley care facility two weeks ago told 10News Friday he was found safe in North Park.Aldofo Otanez, who has schizophrenia, lived at Mi Casa es Su Casa. His family said he was planning to visit his brother on February 16 but never arrived.Otanez’ brother said the family passed out flyers and posted pictures on social media.RELATED: Schizophrenic man still missing after two weeksOn Friday, a 10News viewer called the family to say Otanez had been sleeping on the sidewalk on El Cajon Blvd. in North Park.People at Dave’s Flower Box had given him a bottle of water, money to buy coffee, and a burrito.The family says he was hungry but is doing well. 738

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The hospital patient who brutally beat a San Diego nurse faced a judge on Friday for his sentencing. 10News was in the courtroom, where the nurse described how she fought for her life while 41 year-old Geoffrey Brizzolara attacked her.“I stood in his doorway and I said, ‘How may I help you, sir?’ His response was to lift a 25-pound chair over his head and throw it at me,” nursing supervisor Mary Prehoden told the courtroom. “Mr. Brizzolara beat me with his fists. He kicked me and then scratched me and he pulled a handful of hair straight out of my head,” she went on to say.The attack happened last summer at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. He was a patient at the hospital and apparently has a history of mental health issues. He did not know Nurse Preholden.“His actions were deliberate and vicious. I was defenseless,” she told the courtroom.She was joined by other nurses who say that patient violence against nurses is a constant concern across the country. Nurse Trish Mcauliffe told us, “The resources have to be increased- mental health resources.” Mcauliffe described how she was once attacked by a different patient at another hospital. “I ended up with a split lip [and] loose teeth and then he stood in the doorway, laughing.”Friday, Brizzolara was sentenced to one year behind bars, with an option for early-release to a mental health treatment facility.“Every single one of us who chooses to do this for a living is under threat every day in every hospital in this country,” added Prehoden. 1542
