BELLEVUE, Neb. -- Two Sonic employees were killed and multiple others were injured in a shooting at a restaurant near Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday. The Bellevue Police Department (BPD) said during a Sunday press conference that there were five victims, all of whom were employees of the Sonic restaurant. Lt. Andy Jashinke identified the deceased as 22-year-old Nathan Pastrana and 28-year-old Ryan Helbert. They were declared dead at the scene. Two other victims, 18-year-old Zoey Reese Atalig Lujan and 25-year-old Kenneth Germe, were transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center as a "Code 3," which Jashinske described as being in critical or near critical condition. He was charged with identity theft, less than 0.The suspect possesses a Nebraska conceal and carry permit. Police officers located three guns inside the vehicle during the traffic stop on Nov. 18. He was taken to jail, the guns were impounded as evidence and remain with BPD.At 9:23 p.m. on Saturday, a call was received by police dispatch. The caller reported a U-Haul truck that was on fire. The caller described seeing suspicious items such as wires and tubes sticking out of the back of the truck.At 9:24 p.m. a call reported shots fired in the area.First police unit arrived at 9:26 p.m.By 9:27, the first description of the suspect came though as a male, approximately 6 feet 6 inches tall, with a large build and an unknown race.At 9:31, officers reported that they believed they'd located the suspect.At 9:39, the police officers on the scene confirmed they had the suspect in custody.Officers on the west side of Sonic apprehended the suspect. At team of officers on the east side observed victims inside the restaurant and performed first aid immediately on three victims. Ongoing investigationThe presence of the U-Haul truck is being investigated. Police believe it was brought there by the suspect and confirmed that it was in flames and was burned up.Officers located at total of four firearms on the scene.The suspect was not armed when he was arrested. He complied with officers' orders and did not resist arrest.Police said there were customers outside the restaurant and do not believe any were injured.Court records show Silva was arrested and charged with identity theft under 0 on Nov. 18 after he allegedly bought worth of food at the same Sonic using someone else's Sonic app.Members of the public are asked to report any information regarding the shooting and the alleged shooter to the Bellevue Police Department. 3430

BROWN COUNTY, Ind. -- A Brown County woman has been charged with threatening a child welfare worker with a sword. Dixie Floyd Dorantes, 36, faces two felonies and several misdemeanor charges after waving a large sword at a DCS worker on May 3, police say. Police in Nashville, Indiana say a DCS worker had taken Dorantes' child because she had repeatedly failed to pick up the child at the Brown County YMCA. Court documents show Dorantes waved a "viking style sword" at the DCS worker after they showed up to pick up items for the child. Police say Dorantes was also involved in two car crashes as she tried to find the worker. Dorantes faces the following charges: 709

BETHANY, Mo. — Nearly every school in the Kansas City area requires students and staff to wear masks on campus. But that's not the case across the state of Missouri.As of early December, none of the five districts in Harrison County, Missouri — located about 90 minutes northeast of Kansas City — had required masks, but that's soon changing."We have several students, several faculty and staff, that decide to wear a mask," said Dennis Eastin, the superintendent at South Harrison R-II in Bethany. "It is personally up to them."Signs around the campus encourage the use of masks, but the school board decided not to require a mask mandate at the beginning of the school year. Eastin said that decision has been revisited at board meetings, but not changed. Eastin said he hears from parents who support the lack of a mandate, and parents who wish the school would install one."Both are justified in their argument," Eastin said. "I would say there's a difference of opinion out there."Members of the school board have shared their opinions, too. School Board Vice President C.F. Rainey has multiple posts on his personal Facebook page that criticize mask-wearing and public lockdowns. Rainey declined to comment publicly but did say he would allow data that he posted on his Facebook page to stand on its own. Four other members of the school board did not respond to interview requests.South Harrison has roughly 1,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Harrison County's Health Department said that 487 students and faculty have been put under quarantine and/or isolation as of Dec. 2. That number includes students who have had multiple quarantines, and it includes Eastin. Eastin said the largest number of students quarantined at one time happened in November. Roughly 60 students on the 3 and 4-year-old campuses had to stay home for more than two weeks because a staff member had an issue with COVID-19. "I'm supposed to check my kids' temperature every day before they go to school," Cassi Deskins, a South Harrison parent, said. "Do you think that 95% of the parents are doing that? Absolutely not."Deskins is a nurse practitioner in Harrison County who regularly sees COVID-19 patients. Her children wear masks when they go to South Harrison Elementary. "I work in Gilman City, which is a very small community," Deskins said. "There's one clinic. I don't have the option to stay home with my children. My husband is also an essential worker."Deskins said parents in the district are frustrated with how often their children have to quarantine."One of my best friends' daughter has been out four times," Deskins said. "She was on three, two-week quarantines, and then has been on a 10-day quarantine."But she still doesn't expect the school board to institute a mask mandate."I would be thoroughly surprised if there's a mask mandate of South Harrison Schools," Deskins said. But as of Thursday, Dec. 10, the Harrison County Health Department Board had voted to implement a county-wide mask policy. That new policy, which goes into effect on Dec. 17, will require the county's school districts to comply."Listening to the data, they say the safest place for our kids is in the school building," Eastin said.
