SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year, San Diego Comic-Con won't draw the same long lines, crowded corridors, or bustling downtown streets that have become synonymous with the yearly pop culture convention.But organizers hope it'll still draw the same enthusiasm online as in-person in the form of Comic-Con@Home.This year's convention is being held entirely online for free from July 22 to July 26 — ensuring fans get the chance to interact with their favorite fandoms and, of course, absolutely no lines.And the same spirit of exciting panels, creative cosplayers, and exclusive collectibles are set to take the virtual stage.HOW TO WATCHAll five days of SDCC programming will be made available online on Comic-Con's website to stream. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The young woman severely injured in a parasailing accident in Mexico is walking and surfing a year later.Katie Malone's recovery has been a long road. "I survived something I shouldn't have survived," she said.Malone was in Puerto Vallarta in June, 2018 for her birthday. Her parasailing ride turned into a nightmare, "I saw the boat capsize and people on the beach run to try and grab the rope to bring me down." She said the the almost half hour she was in the air she worked to keep calm, thinking about her dog Leroy, and what she was going to wear that night. Her family says the rope snapped and she fell in a tailspin. Katie said it was everything she could do to keep from passing out, or getting sick. She said the next thing she remembered was opening her eyes on the ground with emergency crews surrounding her."My heart dropped to my feet," Katie's brother Brendan said.He started calling and coordinating the trip to Mexico to be with his little sister. He talked about being the megaphone for the family, getting the word out through his music community in Nashville, back home in California and setting up the Gofundme online that reached the world.She underwent three surgeries in Mexico and two weeks in, the swelling in her brain hadn't gone down. Katie's mom said doctors doubled her steroid dosage to bring the swelling in the pituitary glad down and it caused a severe reaction.Katie's mom, Sidona, said she was sick all night and that was the moment they all feared she wouldn't pull through. Sidona said the doctor pulled her aside the next day and said, "you don't understand, she could die and she needs to go home now," urging them to Lifeflight her to the U.S.The family overcame huge struggles, from paying cash for the surgeries in Mexico, as Katie was in between insurance, to finding a way to fly her home. Sidona said certain airlines wouldn't fly that far south in Mexican airspace, and medical airlines wouldn't take her without insurance. Their network of friends and family gave them solutions.The final piece came at the last minute, a ,000 anonymous donation to fund her flight home. Her fight to get back to normal just beginning.Katie re-learned how to walk, drive, and surf over the past year, all the while a smile on her face."Instead of that terrible accident taking control of her, she's taken control of that," Brendan said.Katie says positivity, her family and her dog, Leroy, kept her going. She said she used to take Leroy, her support dog, to the hospital to help others and was thankful he was there for her recovery.She advises anyone facing a challenge that your mind is more powerful than your body and positivity will get you through."I'm not 100% back, I'm getting there, I'm back to work, not full time just part time," she said she's focused on getting healthy. She works as a masseuse, making others feel better.Among her challenges, she has a hard time sitting for extended periods of time, and has to adjust her gait and stance.She hopes her story will change regulations in Mexico so this never happens to anyone else. 3112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The US Census is looking to hire thousands of people in San Diego, and hoping that /hour and flexible schedules are enough to entice people to apply."It takes a community to count a community," says Census Outreach Specialist David Bennett. "We're trying to count everybody once, only once, in the right place. We need help."Right now, the Census is putting on a hiring blitz around the country, with half-a-million jobs to fill. They're canvassing college campuses and other public places where people may be looking for a part-time job."It's for people, especially in this gig-economy, who are looking to get some extra money and be a part of history," says Bennett.Jobs range from counters who will go door to door to management. They can last anywhere from 6 weeks to two years. Pay starts at .50/hour."It's so important," says Bennett. "Our founders wanted to make sure our government looked like our citizens. That's why we do the Census."To be eligible, you must be a US Citizen, 18 years or older, and available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The wife of ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II has filed for divorce, months after the former footballer was convicted of rape.Janelle Winslow filed documents for divorce on Aug. 30 in San Diego, according to records. The couple has been married for 13 years and have two children together.In June, Winslow was found guilty on three counts including rape, lewd conduct, and indecent exposure, stemming from accusations he raped three woman and exposed himself to two others.RELATED: Kellen Winslow Jr. tells 10News he's 'innocent' in rape caseThe jury, however, was deadlocked on eight other charges, including rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - These days, it's hard to go a block in the East Village without seeing a restaurant that's out of business.Recently, the Tilted Kilt, Market Hall, Smashburger, and Sol Cal Cafe have all shuttered. "I just noticed constant, consistent places are closing around here," said Ed Korb, who was visiting the area Thursday.Alina Ahmed, who owns Cafe De L'Opera, on J Street, says it's ever-increasing rents, and higher costs like minimum wage and electricity that are squeezing her, and causing her colleagues to close. She's been in business for five years, and says it gets harder each time the calendar turns. "Everybody thinks that because you're close to Petco Park, which is a great location, you're going to make a lot of money," she said. Ahmed says she tried keeping her cafe open during Padre games, but even then the foot traffic couldn't justify it.The East Village Association, which keeps a directory businesses, said in a statement that this part of the evolution of the neighborhood."As the East Village community continues to grow, so to does the sophistication of our businesses housing and residents, which lends to a competitive higher end urban environment, offering a uniquely downtown San Diego experience," the association said. A spokeswoman for the Tilted Kilt, which also closed its Mission Valley location earlier this year, said the owner of the space near Petco Park wanted to go in a different direction.   1502
