LONGMONT, Colo. -- Rosemary Bieker is the owner of a boutique store called Ivy Rose.“Ivy Rose has been in business a little over three years, and it’s a boutique full on on-trend clothing for women of all generations,” Bieker said.Bieker was inspired to start her own boutique after helping people look their best as a personal shopper for 15 years.“The store is a culmination of everything I’ve done in my career.”However, owning a small business is a fairly new endeavor for Bieker. So when the pandemic hit, it hit hard.“Business is down 50% from last year, so that in itself is a financial challenge,” Bieker said.Even with gloves, hand sanitizer and social distancing rules to stay safe, the truth is, fewer people are out shopping. Bieker says she had to learn how to do business virtually. The first step was upping her social media game.“I think I worked harder from March 17, when we were closed, until we reopened, than I ever have in the history of my store. Because you’re learning – like I didn’t know how to make a video, let alone a video of myself."After improving her social media, she knew she had to dig a little deeper to keep customers engaged. However, she didn’t want to go the e-commerce route – selling clothes through a website.“My passion is working with people and helping them one-on-one and wardrobing them and getting the feedback from them," Bieker said. "And e-commerce you basically put things in boxes, you ship them out.”Bieker doesn’t stand alone. The center offers free consulting from industry experts and provides training courses.At Ivy Rose, Bieker found her own creative online solution. She calls it virtual shopping.“I schedule an appointment through Zoom," Bieker said. "And then what I do is I tour the store with the person just like if you were walking through the store yourself. So I go from rack to rack to rack. And that sounds overwhelming, but really it isn’t, especially if you’re interacting with the person.”Then Bieker rings up the purchase and can get it to the customer through shipping, curbside pickup or delivery if it’s local. Califf says the challenging growth small businesses have faced this year will help them in the future when competing with large companies that sell their products online.“It’s here to stay probably because when you think about diversifying your products and your sales channels, this is a good way to do it," Califf said. "And it’s an unfortunate time for people to be forced into that, but some of it will be lasting.”Bieker says her system has attracted new customers from out of state and she’s confident virtual shopping will continue even after the pandemic.“It’s fun. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s Republican Party has acknowledged owning unofficial ballot drop boxes that state election officials say aren’t allowed. California election officials received reports about the boxes in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange counties. On Sunday, the secretary of state issued a memo telling county registrars the boxes are illegal and ballots must be mailed or brought to official voting locations. State GOP spokesman Hector Barajas said Monday the party owns the boxes. He declined to say how many exist and where they are located. Barajas said the state’s law governing so-called ballot harvesting allows an organization to collect and return groups of ballots. He said the GOP’s boxes are no different than methods use by Democrats to ensure ballots get returned.Neal Kelley, the Orange County's registrar of voters, said official drop boxes are clearly recognizable and carry the official county elections logo. LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Rapper Nipsey Hussle has died after a shooting near a clothing store he was associated with in Los Angeles, according to a high-ranking law enforcement official with the Los Angeles Police Department.Two other people were injured in the shooting around 3:20 p.m., according to the department.The incident occurred near a clothing store around the area of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard.All three victims were transported to a hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead, according to police. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles County public health officials announced Friday the county's first known death of a person stemming from the use of e-cigarettes, or vaping -- the fourth such death nationwide. Dr. Muntu Davis, the county's health officer, said the patient was an ``older adult who had chronic underlying health conditions,'' but vaping is considered the probable cause of death. He declined to give the patient's exact age, but said the person was over 55. Public health officials said there have been a total of 12 Los Angeles County cases of illnesses stemming from e-cigarettes, with the illness dubbed vaping-associated pulmonary injury, or VAPI. One of those 12 cases was the person who died. Authorities declined to say if the other 11 patients were still hospitalized. Health officials declined to specify exactly what type of vaping product the person used. Davis stressed that ``it is not clear at this time if there is a specific product or device'' leading to the illnesses. He said that in all but one of the 12 county cases, the patients had a ``history of using a cannabis or marijuana-type product,'' notably THC, the active chemical in marijuana. Echoing a warning issued Friday morning by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Barbara Ferrer, director of the county Department of Public Health, urged residents ``to stop vaping now until further information about what is causing lung damage and deaths can be understood.'' ``The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health takes this threat seriously and today we're issuing a warning to all residents about the use of these devices as potentially harmful to proper lung function,'' Ferrer said. Redfield said in a statement. ``All available information is being carefully analyzed, and these initial findings are helping us narrow the focus of our investigation and get us closer to the answers needed to save lives.'' According to the CDC, possible vaping-related illnesses have been reported in more than 25 states. ``While this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products,'' according to a CDC statement. ``People who do use e-cigarette products should monitor themselves for symptoms -- e.g., cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever -- and promptly seek medical attention for any health concerns. Regardless of the ongoing investigation, people who use e-cigarette products should not buy these products off the street and should not modify e-cigarette products or add any substances that are not intended by the manufacturer. E-cigarette products should never be used by youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products.'' Davis said the county has been receiving reports since Aug. 14 of ``people experiencing severe and sudden lung disease after having a history of vaping.''
