The woodworking elves of the La Costa Glen senior living community in Carlsbad have spent nearly a year creating 100 handmade toys of all shapes and sizes.The toys have up to 39 pieces, crafted with various types of wood like walnut, cherry, and mahogany. Countless hours have gone into the effort. Among the toys are a truck, grasshopper, and mouse. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of people packed into a classroom in Carlsbad Wednesday night, concerned about community safety in the wake of a brutal murder. More than 200 people showed up. Many were forced to listen from the hallway because the room was so crowded. “We don’t feel as safe as we used to,” said Carlsbad resident Charlie Christenson about why he came to the meeting. “I thought it was great to have the forum,” he added. It came more than a week after 64-year-old Marj Gawitt was stabbed to death in her home on Outrigger Lane, a development overlooking the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Two transients were arrested and charged in the murder. Prosecutors say Gawitt was stabbed 50 times and tortured. Still, she managed to call 911 herself and alert police about her assailants. “I’ve been a police officer in Carlsbad for over 28 years, and to my knowledge this is the firs time in that particular community a crime like that has happened,” said Carlsbad police Chief Neil Gallucci. For two hours, Gallucci and other top police officials fielded questions from residents about the murder and the lingering safety concerns it has brought about.Christenson said he came to ask the chief one question. “I asked him if there were any changes to outreach or enforcement in response to this issue and he said no,” said Christenson. “That was disappointing.” But Gallucci said the meeting itself was necessary to get a feel for the issues. “I think having this meeting was a big step forward,” he said. He wanted to explain to the crowd how they respond to calls and what resources they have to do it. "This has gone too far."Drake is a part of the LGBTQ community. She's also a candidate for state senate."Our educational system is supposed to be welcoming, it is supposed to be inclusive, it is supposed to provide everyone access," Drake said. "Now our most vulnerable children have to battle this."It's an eight-page document that calls for each decision to be made case-by-case. It notes students who may be confused on their sexuality can be admitted if they follow church teachings."I was heartbroken because at the end of the day they are discriminating against children," Drake said.The change goes on to say that children who have switched from their birth sex in any way may not be admitted."Policies have to include everybody regardless of how you love, how you identify, you still deserve an education," Drake said. Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. She says Heath's approach resonates so well with students, discussions often continue outside the classroom.
