SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Leaders of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor plan to announce Monday whether they will endorse a potential strike by grocery workers at Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions in San Diego County and the rest of Southern California.Raising the threat of the first Southland grocery strike in nearly 16 years, grocery workers last week overwhelmingly authorized their union to call for a work stoppage if a contract agreement cannot be reached.``Southern California grocery workers voted in large numbers, and overwhelmingly rejected the unfair terms that have been proposed by Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons,'' said John Grant, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770.The voting was conducted Monday and Tuesday, Grant said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday announced the deaths of two more residents in San Diego County due to influenza-related complications, bringing this flu season's confirmed death toll to five. A 78-year-old North County woman died earlier this month and a 70-year- old woman died in July, but both deaths were only reported last week, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. Both women, who were not publicly identified, had no record of receiving a flu shot and both had additional medical issues, HHSA officials said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California State University police chiefs Friday banned the use of the carotid restraint and pledged to implement policing recommendations offered by a 2015 federal task force on the CSU's 23 campuses, which include San Diego State and Cal State San Marcos."As police chiefs of the California State University's 23 campus police departments, we have been galvanized by the many voices across our state and nation demanding accountability, equity and justice," the chiefs said in a joint statement. "We have seen the tragic impact of racism and bigotry, and many in our departments have experienced it personally. "To that end, and effective immediately, we are prohibiting the use of the carotid control hold by all CSU police officers.
