The National Transportation Safety Board released a report Wednesday stating that the pilots were likely at fault with the August 2019 plane crash involving former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family in Tennessee.The report stated that the pilot's approaching the runway at Elizabethton Municipal Airport too fast and the flight crew's decision not to abort the landing was the likely cause of the crash.The plane then bounce landed, causing a landing gear to collapse, and the pilots losing control of the airplane."Contributing to the accident was the pilot's failure to deploy the speedbrakes during the initial touchdown, which may have prevented the runway excursion, and the pilot's attempt to go around after deployment of the thrust reversers," the report said.Earnhardt's wife and child were also onboard the plane when it crashed.The agency said the pilot and co-pilot were not injured, and the three passengers sustained minor injuries.You can read the full report below: NTSB Earnhardt Jr. Report by Sarah Dewberry on Scribd 1058

The Kirchner family has a lot to celebrate this holiday season. Their son, Karson, is a happy and energetic 11-month-old baby. He's come a long way since being diagnosed with a rare heart condition that will require constant vigilance. But his progress is yet another example of how, this year, doctors are making amazing strides in so many ways.Josh and Ashley Kirchner weren't sure how much time they would have with their son. At 28 weeks pregnant, they found out he had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, meaning the left side of his heart was underdeveloped."They came back with a doctor and then we're kind of like, 'This isn't good'. And the doctor told us, 'Well, we can't find part of his heart on the ultrasound'," recalled Josh Kirchner.Some research led the Kirchners to Children's Hospital Colorado, where Karson was enrolled in a study to determine if stem cells from his own umbilical cord blood could help his heart function."There's another part of stem cells that don't create new tissue but create an environment to improve the existing tissue that's there, and that's what we're doing with this particular stem cell therapy," explained Dr. James Jaggers, with Children's Hospital Colorado.Dr. Jaggers says this syndrome is the leading cause of death for children with heart defects in their first year of life. Karson's first surgery was when he was just two days old. His second to inject stem cells into his heart came a couple of months later."The mode of stem cell delivery was actual physical injection of the stem cells into the heart muscle itself. We do that in a number of different places on the heart to try and improve sort of a global function of the heart for the long term," said Dr. Jaggers.One problem the doctors faced with the second surgery was it came during the start of the pandemic when travel was shut down. The Kirchners drove six hours from their home in South Dakota, but the stem cells had to be driven from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to Denver, a more than 12-hour drive.Karson still needs one more surgery, which doctors say will be when he's 2 or 3 years old. His parents know there's no roadmap for this. And while they wait to see how his body responds, they want to enjoy every moment."We get to enjoy our little boy and kind of live in the moment a little better and not have to worry about that hanging over our head. We know it's coming. But, like they said to do, don't worry about it. When it comes, it comes," said Josh Kirchner.Dr. Jaggers says the second phase of the study is done. Karson was the 16th to be accepted into it. The next phase will also include the use of stem cells in the third surgery. Dr. Jaggers says preliminary data shows some improved heart function. The man accused of killing 22 people and wounding two dozen more at a Walmart in Texas is expected to be reindicted Thursday as he faces another murder charge in the mass shooting that targeted Mexicans, prosecutors said.Patrick Crusius of Allen, Texas, is currently being held without bond on one count of capital murder of multiple people under Texas state law. The 21-year-old has also been charged with several federal hate crimes related to the shooting, according to a 90-count indictment unsealed in February.District Attorney Jaime Esparza said the latest murder charge will account for 36-year-old Guillermo “Memo” Garcia, who died nine months after the Aug. 3 massacre in the Texas border of El Paso that’s considered one of the deadliest attacks on Latinos in recent U.S. history. Esparza said Crusius will also face more counts in relation to the dozens of people injured in the shooting. The new charges will be added to the indictment prior to the grand jury’s term ending on June 30, Esparza said.“We’re reindicting the defendant to include the additional death and to include all of those injured in the Walmart shooting in order to give the next DA all of their options,” Esparza added. “We just want to cover all our bases.”The upcoming reindictment comes more than 10 months after the mass shooting in the majority Latino and Hispanic city federal prosecutors say was sparked by militant racism. They have said Crusius carried out the attack to scare Latinos into leaving the U.S., a plot they allege he outlined in a racist screed published online before the attack.More than 20 people survived the shooting and suffered from injuries. Some underwent surgery, and one remains in the hospital. Hundreds more have suffered psychological trauma either because they were present or because a loved one was wounded, according to local officials.Esparza, who’s set to retire after 28 years in office, said he hopes that the added charges will help provide continuity in the case and eventually lead to justice should the DA succeeding him decide to pursue the state case against Crusius.Voters will pick a new DA in a runoff election on July 14th. It’s one of several factors that will help answer some legal and financial questions, including the trial’s start date and location.The Department of Justice will prosecute on a parallel track with Texas officials.
