The "City by the Bay" is known for more than a few things. Treacherous hills, cable cars, golden bridges and…Sourdough bread, which is San Francisco’s not so well-kept secret for at least the last 150 years, if not longer. Just ask Jen Latham.“The Basque country, which is that region kind of in between France and Spain, has an amazing tradition of this exact style of bread, like that very crusty, very wet, very open crumb bread. And during the gold rush and just after the gold rush, there was this huge influx of Basque people to the to this area. They brought that tradition of bread here,” said Latham.Latham is the head of Bread at Tartine Bakery in San Francisco.Ever since San Francisco boomed in the mid 1800’s with the gold rush, the city has been a haven for the sour bakers. The tradition is alive and well at Tartine.What makes sourdough different than other bread? It’s this little thing called a starter.“It’s a paste of flour and water that’s inoculated with the right balance of yeast and bacteria to raise dough,” said Latham.Yup just mix a little flour and water and let it collect the natural bacteria in the air and you too can have your very own sourdough starter. And since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic people have.People at home have been making, feeding, and nurturing their own starter at home.“Hopped on the bandwagon during COVID, just like millions of people probably did. Kind of found some blogs and started from there but it’s been going since like April,” said TC Jamison, a home baker.Jamison started his starter six month ago when the lockdowns were in full swing. He’s been baking and feeding it ever since.“You’re dealing with something that’s alive, so it’s going to be different every time,” said Jamison.Yup, feeding it fresh flour and water every day, for six months. It’s a lot of work.“The starter has been going, the one that we use now for well over 20 years,” Latham explained.So Jamison has a little ways to go. Some bakeries in San Francisco have had an ongoing starter for more than 150 years.But Jamison has a pretty special goal for his starter."My daughter was born in June. I was pretty hell bent on keeping the starter going before she was born and then afterwards. So now I can always say, that’s been around since before you were born,” he said. That will go down in the dad joke hall of fame.At Tartine, they’ll continue to shape, fold, and flour their way into the fabric of San Francisco sourdough history.“You’re never done learning about bread. There’s always more to learn. There’s always things you can change, there’s infinite variables. The flour and the weather and you’re fermentation management, timing, temperature. The Big 12 will permit its teams to play one nonconference football game this year to go along with their nine league contests as plans for the pandemic-altered season continue to fall into place. The Big 12 university presidents signed off on the conference's scheduling model, which gives schools the option to play one nonconference game at home. The 10-team Big 12 already plays a nine-game conference schedule. Unlike other Power Five conference that have switched to either exclusively (Big 12 Pac-12 and SEC) or mostly (ACC) league games this season, the Big 12 could not add more conference games without teams playing each other more than once.“I would like to salute the work of our university presidents and chancellors, athletics directors, coaches, medical advisors and administrators who have worked tirelessly and collaboratively during these extraordinary times,” said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “We believe this change provides the best opportunity going forward. The bar where everyone knows your name is closing permanently.After 20 years, the "Cheers" bar at Boston's Faneuil Hall Marketplace is closing.According to CBS Boston, the owner said the decision to close was because of the landlord and the coronavirus pandemic.The Faneuil Hall bar and restaurant is a replica of the bar on the TV show, which ran from 1982 to 1993. The Bull & Finch Pub on Beacon Street that inspired the iconic series and is now known as Cheers Beacon Hill, would remain open, CBS Boston reported.The owner told WGME that the bar will close on Aug. 30. 583

Students around the United States are walking out of class to demand tougher gun laws in response to last week's deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, but some schools are threatening them with harsh punishments.The Needville Independent School District in Texas issued a warning Tuesday that anyone who participated in a walkout or other political protest would be suspended for three days."Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative. We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved. All will be suspended for 3 days and parent notes will not alleviate the discipline," Superintendent Curtis Rhodes said in a statement posted on the Needville High School Facebook page.Rhodes said the Houston-area district would not tolerate any protests or demonstrations during school hours."A school is a place to learn and grow educationally, emotionally and morally. A disruption of the school will not be tolerated," he said.The letter was posted on the same day that a 14-year-old was arrested at Needville Junior High School and charged with making a terroristic threat.Survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland have been active in the week since the shooting -- holding rallies, being interviewed by national media and organizing a bus trip to the Florida State Capitol to meet with lawmakers.Students at other schools in Florida and across the United States have held rallies to show support.A school district in Waukesha, Wisconsin, sent a letter to parents telling them that the school district is not involved in a walkout that is scheduled for March 14 and that teachers and students would not be excused if they participate."Participation in a walkout is disruptive and against school regulations, and will subject students to disciplinary measures," Superintendent Todd Gray said in the letter.In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, Gray said the the original letter was designed to let parents know that the walkout next month was planned by an outside group with no connection to the school."At no time have we said students cannot make a statement peacefully while staying in school," Gray said, adding that he had not gotten requests to participate from any students or student groups."We acknowledge that individuals have a right to demonstrate to support a cause.
