SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved gorilla has died at the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens. The zoo says Zura, a 39-year-old Western lowland gorilla, was being treated for “long-term digestive issues” but her condition recently had worsened and she died Friday.Zura arrived in San Francisco in 1982 from the Columbus Zoo, where her grandmother was Colo. Colo, who died in 2017, was widely known as the first gorilla in the world to be born in captivity. Tanya Peterson, CEO of the San Francisco Zoological Society, says Zura “had a beautiful, distinctive face and a one-of-a-kind personality" and she will be missed. 620

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Santa Ana winds are once again sweeping through the county. Fire crews and the city are on high alert after recent brush fires around San Diego. They are urging the community to take action. This comes after flames sparked in a canyon in the Talmadge area last Tuesday. Neighbors had to evacuate as the fire came within 200 feet of homes. “We do know that where that fire started, there was a homeless encampment,” says Fire Chief Colin Stowell. “It’s important for those who see an active encampment to report it.” Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsThe next day crews responded to another brush fire in City Heights. The blaze scorched an acre of land. It’s not uncommon for homes to sit within feet of canyon-like areas. The city says they work to clear the brush in these spaces, but they also face some challenges. “Unfortunately, because of the number of open spaces and what we call the wildland-urban interface properties that but up against open space or canyons, they can only really get out there every three years,” says Stowell. The city says it's continually investing in new fire equipment. In June, the city added eight new fire engines and two brush engines. 10News learned a new helicopter will be deployed soon. 1262

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- With record-breaking heat this summer and many people working from home, San Diegans may have seen a spike in their energy bill. OhmConnect is a free service helping residents earn cash and save energy.“We’ve seen people’s energy bills increase typically from 10 to 15 percent,” says Curtis Tongue, Co-Founder of OhmConnect. With more energy use, the county has been no stranger to rolling blackouts. OhmConnect is hoping to change that.“Instead of powering up some additional power plant, after the sun sets, alternatively, you can just get people to save energy,” says Tongue. The free service pays users every week to save money.“We will send you a text message and ask you to power down for about an hour, and if you do, you get paid.”A new incentive program for users already has some people cashing in from a prize pool. Last week a woman in Northern California won 0,000. A woman in San Diego was rewarded ,000. A ,000 prize was also given to a resident who lives in San Diego county.Users must meet the energy-saving goal for an OhmHour to be placed in the prize pool. 1108

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A lot of people will do just about anything to avoid the dentist.Needles, drilling, and pain can cause all kinds of anxiety, but a local dentist is using a new laser that he says could transform dentistry.Sara Scarafone 15, is a patient at Dr. Alex Corondoni’s office in San Carlos. “Put the sunglasses on you, and we'll get started,” Corondoni said. But instead of a drill, Corondoni is using a laser. “It's hitting that tooth at 1800 pulses a second. It's almost like if you were jack hammering something,” he said. It's called Solea.  The laser vaporizes the enamel, allowing dentists to fill cavities painlessly. Corondoni has been practicing for 28 years and says it's unlike anything he's ever seen.“I've done some big, big, big fillings, that I was like, ‘You're not feeling this?!’” And no drilling means no Novocain. “I was excited to hear that there wasn't any needles involved,” Scarafone said.“My average patients are in their 60s and 70s, so I have a lot of medications, so if they have arrhythmias or heart problems, I'm not having to give them any anesthetic. It's huge,” Corondoni said. He says this new procedure turns what normally takes an hour into less than 10 minutes. “It just felt like a lot of air, and a little bit of water,” Scarafone said. The device is made by Boston-based Convergent Delta and claims to be revolutionary-- reducing recovery time.“You're not numb. You can go to work. There's no excuses,” Corondoni said. “I can do all the different parts of the mouth at one time.”Even normally complex procedures on soft tissue like gums become more routine. “I would have had to cut it, suture it, wait a couple weeks, and now it's just done and they come back in 4 or 5 days and it's healed. It's amazing!”A nearby touch screen lets dentists adjust the speed and precision of the laser. Ultimately, Corondoni says it's not just improving his patient's experiences, but his practice and reputation.“Sometimes, I'd have to sedate patients to have them come in here, just to get a needle.” Now, he no longer feels like the enemy. “I'm a good guy now. I'm a good guy.”To find a dentist that uses this technology click here.  2200

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): With recreational marijuana now legal in California, doctors are warning parents to be extra vigilant when checking their kids' candy on Halloween. They worry that the kids may confuse edibles for candy."There's going to be candy all over the house," says Dr. James Elia from Sharp Grossmont Hospital. "If there are edibles that are in the household and are forgotten to put away, kids may be able to get into them as well."State law allows edibles but has strict guidelines for how much THC can be in them. A package can't contain more than 100 milligrams, and each piece can't have more than 10.Marijuana vendors say new rules also make it harder for the edibles to be confused for candy."You cannot use the word candy and animals cannot be in the shape of certain animals and images that might be attractive to children," says Kyle Dukes from Torrey Holistics. He also noted that state law doesn't allow the edibles to be in any shape the State Bureau of Cannabis Control deems "attractive to children." Specifically, they can't be shaped like fruit, animals or lollipops.Packaging for marijuana-infused food must also be child resistant and clearly labeled.Dr. Elia recommends keeping edibles locked away, similar to the way people treat medicine they don't want kids to get. He says the side effects of THC on children could be devastating."They could experience alteration of mental status, sometimes hallucinations, severe anxiety, severe paranoia," he says. "With children, it's also noted shortness of breath."Elia also says parents should be extra vigilant when checking their kids' trick-or-treat candy, to make sure an edible didn't wind up in their collection."We all have to be concerned about this," he says. "We all have to raise the level of suspicion." 1811
