SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since a movie theater was first added to Horton Plaza in 1985, San Diegans downtown have had cinema options at their fingertips.That is, until the plaza fell on tough times, as business slowed and patrons gained more options for retail and entertainment downtown.The trend has now reached the plaza's Regal movie theater, which closed its doors this year. A sign posted on the entrance of the theater says the location was to close on Jan. 27.Since then, Regal Theaters says theater-goers should visit the next closest location — Rancho Del Rey — to redeem discounted tickets or gift cards.RELATED: Plans for Horton Plaza mall reveal tech campus, retail revitalizationThe departure of the theater heralds the next phase planned for the once iconic shopping center, as only a few businesses remain.Plans revealed last year show real estate firm Stockdale Capital Partners, which has purchased the property in 2018, has other ideas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Shanna Ben-Moshe says the Torrey Pines Glider Port is one of her favorite places in San Diego.But on a visit last month, she saw something that ruined the trip.“I didn’t really know what to do because I was so shocked to see that in a place that I go to all the time," Ben-Moshe said.She's talking about a remote control plane - with a Nazi swastika painted on the rudder.“My great-grandma is a holocaust survivor,” Ben-Moshe said. “She was in Auschwitz for a long time. She lost all her family.”Ben-Moshe took a picture of the plane just before she left. She shared it with Brian Blacher, who co-runs a nonprofit group called Shield of David, which fights anti-Semitism.Blacher went back to the gliderport to investigate. The plane wasn't there, but a different pilot explained that it's common for people to fly German replica warplanes.“It's hurtful," Blacher said. "We've got a big Jewish community, we've got holocaust survivors living here. He's like, 'it's a plane, what are you so upset about', kind of deal."It's unclear who flew the remote control plane, and there wasn't anyone flying those kinds of planes when ABC 10News went to the gliderport on Wednesday. Robin Marien, the flight director at the gliderport, declined to comment on the swastika plane. He noted, however, that radio control pilots do tend to fly planes with vintage design.Ben-Moshe, now back in college in Wisconsin, says this won't stop her from going back to the gliderport. “It's a place that I love," she said, "and I don’t want anything to take away from that." 1575

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some men are sharing their story of an unlikely redemption after police spotted them spray-painting graffiti on a street in El Cajon.Gripped by the message of the recent protests, Dre, Dan, and Gee did something they've never done before. The three, all of them artists, ended up on Heart Drive with spray paint."Just wanted to put up something, so when people drive by, it says 'love.' It says 'peace,'" said Dan."We are about art. People need to see the message," said Dre.Around 2 a.m., El Cajon Police Sergeant Mike Murphy pulled up to the three, before two more officers arrived. The three friends prepared to be arrested. Sgt. Murphy surveyed what they painted: peace signs, the words 'BLM' and 'Justice For Floyd.'He talked to them about the impact of graffiti. The men apologized. There would be no arrest. The three friends offered to fix it and Sgt. Murphy said he would help."That's a good feeling. It's the same as the message we were out there painting that night," said Dan.That same day, the men turned up with paint and rollers and together with Sgt. Murphy, they covered the spray paint. The three men decided they would funnel their passions into an art installation with the theme of unity. Sgt. Murphy agreed to help them find a venue for it. Dre and Dan say their encounter with him shows them that police can be part of the solution."Not every cop is out to kill black people. There are good cops out there, and I think people need to start understanding and noticing," said Dre.After the art piece is complete, Sgt. Murphy plans to submit a request to El Cajon officials in hopes of displaying it on city property. 1664
