NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for the former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein are urging a judge to free her to await trial under a .5 million bail package that would include armed guards to keep her in a New York City residence. The bail arguments on behalf of Ghislaine Maxwell were filed late Monday in Manhattan federal court. According to the Associated Press, Maxwell and her husband offered .5 million as part of the bail package, which consists of three homes, a bond secured by million in property, and 0,000 cash.Maxwell is scheduled to face a July trial on charges that she recruited three teenage girls for Epstein to abuse in the mid-1990s. Her first attempt at bail shortly after her July arrest was rejected. Her lawyers say she wants nothing more than to remain in the United States and fight the charges. They say the case depends on the uncorroborated testimony of a handful of witnesses about events over 25 years ago. 948

No one likes to step in the "you-know-what" that dogs leave behind. Thanks to science, some Wisconsin apartment complexes are finding out exactly what dog, and what owner is responsible for those unattended piles. "It resolved issues immediately," said Ed Muisenga, the property manager at Prairie Grass Living in Pewaukee. He says they implemented the dog DNA policy from the beginning. It's built into their pet policy so when dogs move in, their cheeks are swabbed and their DNA stored in a registry through the company PooPrints Wisconsin. Then if Muisenga finds any waste that hasn't been picked up, they can send it to a lab to be tested, and eventually matched to one of the resident's dogs. "A lot of people thought it was a cool idea, I do too," he said. "It was kind of something I thought was funny in the beginning but it made a lot of sense." Diane and Frank Busateri don't live in a complex with this policy but nearby. They said most dog owners in their community are responsible. "It's kind of weird," said Diane. "I think it's unnecessary if people are willing to cooperate with each other," added Frank. If the DNA test proves an owner didn't pick up their dog's poop, the Prairie Grass Living complex imposes a fee that's between 0 and 0. But for the most part, the policy leads to more accountability, according to Anna Schloesser, the owner of PooPrints Wisconsin. She says they have 60 properties in the state using this service and most property owners have reported very little issue with waste left behind. "You have 'he said she said' and you can't figure out who did it," she said. "This is just an easy way to pinpoint where it came from and solve the problem."The company says some municipalities are even considering implementing a similar policy, so waste left behind in parks or other public places could also be tracked.  1942

Next month, we will showcase our values and vision to the nation while keeping people safe and engaging more Americans than ever before. That’s the kind of smart and steady leadership America deserves. And that’s the leadership Joe Biden will bring to the White House.— Tom Perez (@TomPerez) July 24, 2020 313

Nine-year-old Jacob Thompson is your average kid. His obsessions include Minecraft and Legos, and he's a huge "Star Wars" fan. He's also a photographer, singer and comedian, according to his stepmother, Tara Artinyan. And most of all, he really, really loves penguins. But Jacob has Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, and doctors told his family in early October he probably only had a month to live.So they'll celebrate Christmas early this year, and Jacob wants people to celebrate with him by sending him cards, his mother, Michelle Simard told CNN."He got some cards from this Halloween, and he opened up and saw them and it was like getting a gift. He read it to us and had a big smile his face and his nose scrunched," Jacob's father, Roger Guay, told CNN in a phone interview. "He was excited to see what people had to say and it just brightened his day."Fighting a long battleJacob was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma when he was 5. According to the American Cancer Society, only half of children diagnosed with the disease reach the five-year survival mark. After Jacob was admitted to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital on October 11, doctors discovered that the neuroblastoma had spread to his head and was incurable, according to a GoFundMe page set up by his mother."People have called him an old soul and I believe it because he has taught us so much about life and about people," said Guay. "He's accomplished everything that he needed to do by 9 years old, and a lot of people don't accomplish that, ever."An early ChristmasArtinyan said the family decided to "fast-forward" Christmas to give Jacob one last celebration. And for him, that means a lot of snow, a decked-out tree, and of course, a real-life Santa Claus. But before his improvised Christmas celebration takes place in early November, Jacob asked for cards from anyone around the world who wanted to share his Christmas spirit. And only five days after he announced his wish, he has already received more than 100 cards from people all over the country -- and even beyond."We got over a hundred, and they're from all over the world. We have some from the Netherlands, from Australia, from Denmark," said Artinyan. "We've heard from all over the world at this point. We've even heard from Antarctica."Antarctica -- where Jacob's favorite animals live."We'd like people to live life like a penguin, and by that we mean dive into life, find warmth among friends, stay cool and just give to others," said Artinyan, referring to Jacob's favorite penguin poem, "Advice from a Penguin."Cards can be sent to Jacob here:Jacob Thompsonc/o Maine Medical Center22 Bramhall StreetPortland, ME 04102USA 2676

New heart health research found that taking a low-dose daily aspirin to cut chances of a heart attack or stroke may have risks that outweigh the benefits. The latest studies revealed the effects of the blood-thinning, anti-inflammatory drug on patients, who did not yet develop heart disease or other heart-related issues but were at moderate risk.Research found aspirin does help patients with diabetes, who are at higher risk to develop or die from heart problems. However, the risk of serious bleeding far outweighed the benefit of taking the drug. The study found aspirin was not effective in preventing heart attacks or strokes for moderate risk patients, because they had other health issues, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.Doctors also cautioned using fish oil supplements, instead of aspirin, would have similar disappointing results. Instead, health professionals suggest eating fish to improve your heart’s health.Fish oil may be more beneficial for people who have already suffered a heart attack. 1043
