SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mesmerizing works of art will hit San Diego's this Labor Day weekend as more than 300 tons of sand transform Broadway Pier into a sand sculptor's playground.From Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, the Port of San Diego will host the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge along the city's waterfront. This year's theme of "Wonder" will pay tribute to the Port's Wonderfront 2019 events, including Wonderspaces and Wonderfront music festival this November.The competition will feature 12 master sculptors from around the world to create museum-level quality sculptures out of nothing but sand. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It all started when La Jolla Shores resident, Penne Horn, had a birthday coming up."It started as a joke. My son asked what I wanted for my birthday and without any thought the words flew out of my mouth 'I want an ice cream maker,'" Horn said. The rest you could say is history.Since the day she received her wishlist item, she like many of us, spent time indoors with her new addition. "I started making ice cream. I just had too much of it and thought there's gotta be something I can do with this," Horn described. So she began to give it away to neighbors. It was so good that nearby residents with a sweet tooth wanted more and insisted on paying her, when a light a bulb went off. "I was hearing stories of families who got dogs in beginning of COVID, then lost their job and couldn't feed family let alone their dogs. I thought I will make the ice cream and ask people for donations. They'll donate and I'll buy dog food, and take it down to St. James church where they'll distribute it." Then new ideas kept getting added to the mix."One lady came to me and said I'll donate whatever if you make an ice cream named after my dog." Then, Twoee's Howling Good Ice Cream was born, named after her own sweet furry companion. "I draw all these different characters of dogs and name the ice cream after their dog."Horn's a former member of the Scripps and Humane Society boards, and she's always given back to the community. "It's part of my life, it's part of who I am."This time around, her community service was something new, a bit more sweet and born out of a pandemic. "There's a little silver lining if you look for it, I never would've started this if it hadn't been for the pandemic. There's good in everything." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Longtime San Diego State football coach Rocky Long is stepping down after nine seasons.San Diego State officials announced Wednesday that Long will be replaced by Aztecs defensive line coach Brady Hoke.Hoke was SDSU's head coach in 2009 and 2010 before leaving to become head coach at Michigan. Long served as defensive coordinator under Hoke and replaced him when he left in 2010.RELATED: San Diego State basketball reaches top ten in polls for first time since 2014During his nine seasons as head coach, Long lead the team to a 81-38 record, three Mountain West Conference championships, and four 10-win seasons since 2015. Combined with previous head coach positions, he is 146-107 in his career."It's time. It's time," Long said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kevin Luo of Pacific Trails Middle School has been crowned the winner of the 2018 countywide spelling bee. The event began at 9 a.m. at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station and lasted for nearly four hours. Last year’s local winner was Pacific Trails Middle School student Yash Hande. Yash advanced to the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
