TAIPEI, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said Monday that the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with the mainland is aimed to help Taiwanese people to do business and boost the island's competitiveness.Ma made the remarks in Taoyuan, a northwestern county of the island, at a gathering to mark the Chinese Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year. The ECFA is a wide-ranging economic pact for further normalizing trade and investment ties across the Taiwan Strait, which Ma hopes to sign with the mainland this year to help fuel Taiwan's economic revival.Tariff reduction would promote the sales of goods from Taiwan to the mainland, which will benefit both the Taiwanese businesses and the foreign-funded businesses in Taiwan, Ma said. This will help Taiwan to introduce more foreign investment and grant the island an opportunity to become a hub of economy and trade in the Asia-Pacific region, he said.As the mainland is Taiwan's biggest trade partner, the pact will certainly do more good than harm, Ma said.Ma also attended an ancestor worship ceremony in Majiazhuang, Miaoli County on Monday and said that the ancestors of him and local residents moved from Fufengtang, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, to the island some 2,000 years ago.He also spoke optimistically of the economy situation and expected an economic growth of 4 percent in Taiwan this year.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the world's largest lender by market value, said Monday it extended 110 billion yuan (16.1 billion U.S. dollars) of new loans in January, less than the amount in the same period of 2009."The lending growth in January was stable and moderate, which has well satisfied the real economic demand," the bank said. The ICBC statistics showed lendings of the bank totaled 117.1 billion yuan in January 2009.The bank said it would focus on financing ongoing government projects and continue to extend more loans to small businesses, while strictly controlling loans to new projects and high energy-consuming and polluting industries.ICBC last Wednesday said its loan growth in early and mid-January was "a little fast" as many ongoing projects needed funds, but the lending pace had stabilized since, as a concentrated volume of existing loans had come due and some credit card debts had been repaid. It also announced it would maintain a "reasonable and balanced" lending rate in a move to ease mounting public concerns about possible credit cuts.To prevent economic overheating, the government last month announced it would restrict its overall credit growth to 7.5 trillion yuan in 2010, compared with last year's 9.59 trillion yuan. However, a report from Monday's Economic Information Daily said that as of Jan. 29, Chinese banks had already extended nearly 1.6 trillion yuan new loans this year.
BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior public security official of China on Tuesday urged relevant departments and local authorities to do a good job in ensuring security and maintaining stability as the annual national parliamentary and advisory sessions approach. All local authorities and relevant departments should make further efforts to ensure the meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) go on safely and smoothly, Yang Huanning, administrative vice minister of public security, said at a national teleconference."The task of ensuring security and maintaining stability during the two sessions remains onerous" despite previous efforts in this regard, said Yang."We should keep clear-minded and never lower our guard," Yang warned. He urged local officials to do more work in dissolving social conflicts and try to root up troubles that may disturb stability. The vice minister also ordered to minimize the inconvenience that security measures might cause to people's life and work.Incidents that might disturb social stability and threaten security should be handled properly and strictly according to the law, Yang warned.Huang Ming, vice minister of public security, demanded at the same meeting emergencies and breaking events be dealt with promptly and properly. The annual full session of the CPPCC National Committee, the top advisory body, is slated to open Wednesday afternoon, while that of the NPC, the national legislature, is scheduled to open Friday.
