LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- Two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand sent quite a few people to Google Search Sunday night, when she ended her speech with the words "inclusion rider."“Look around, ladies and gentlemen, because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed,” she announced. Then she added: “I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider.”In the post-show speeches, she explained what those precious words mean - and how surprised she is that she never knew them before. "I just found out about this last week," she said. "An inclusion rider..which means you can ask for and or demand at least 50 percent diversity in not only the casting but also the crew."McDormand went on to say that as a 35-year veteran in the film industry, she was shocked that she never knew about the inclusion rider. "This whole idea of women trending...no," she said shaking her head. "Africans Americans trending...no. It changes now."   1030

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Public health officials in Southern California are taking extra precautions this Fourth of July weekend as Los Angeles experiences a spike in COVID-19 cases. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is ordering the county’s beaches be closed Friday morning through Monday morning. Officials hope this prevents dangerous overcrowding that could result in the spread of the novel coronavirus. For that same reason, the department is also prohibiting fireworks displays in the county during the holiday weekend.Beach parking lots, piers, bike paths and access points will be closed, as well. The health department says key metrics show steep increases in community spread. On Monday, officials announced more than 2,900 new cases of COVID-19, which is the single largest one-day case count since the pandemic began.Projections by the Department of Health Services show a clear increase in area hospitalizations in the coming weeks, which could cause a surge in the health care system.“Closing the beaches and prohibiting fireworks displays during this important summer holiday weekend was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but it’s the responsible decision to protect public health and protect our residents from a deadly virus. The Fourth of July holiday weekend typically means large crowds and gatherings to celebrate, a recipe for increased transmission of COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “We all need to take this virus more seriously and residents and business owners must do their part. Physical distancing isn’t optional, wearing a face covering isn’t optional, spending time only with those you live with isn’t optional — these are requirem

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California's overwhelmed hospitals are setting up makeshift extra beds for coronavirus patients, and a handful of facilities in hard-hit Los Angeles County are drawing up emergency plans in case they have to limit how many people receive life-saving care. The number of people hospitalized across California with confirmed COVID-19 infections is more than double the state's previous peak, reached in July.A state model forecasts the total could hit 75,000 patients by mid-January.Dr. Christina Ghaly, Los Angeles County's health services director, said plans for rationing care are not in place yet, but they need to be established because "the worst is yet to come." 695

LOS ANGELES (KGTV/CNS) - A person infected with measles passed through Los Angeles International Airport twice in late May and public health officials are urging anyone who may have been exposed to check their immunization records and report any possible symptoms.According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the infected person -- who does not live in the area -- passed through LAX twice during the Memorial Day weekend.Possibly exposure may have occurred:-- between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. May 26 at LAX Terminal 4 at Gate 48B; and-- between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. May 28 at the Tom Bradley International Terminal Remote Gate.Health officials noted that anyone who may have been in those areas may be at risk of developing measles for up to 21 days following exposure.People who think they may have been exposed were urged to check their immunization history and contact their health care provider by phone, particularly if they are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. People who develop possible symptoms, such as illness with fever or an unexplained rash, should stay home and call their health care provider.Southern California doctors have been warning the region to watch out for the illness as cases increase across the U.S. this year. In May, CDC officials said the U.S. had already seen its highest amount of measles cases in three decades. In SoCal, San Diego and Los Angeles have been considered high-risk counties for measles cases."Measles is preventable and the way to end this outbreak is to ensure that all children and adults who can get vaccinated, do get vaccinated. Again, I want to reassure parents that vaccines are safe, they do not cause autism. The greater danger is the disease that vaccination prevents," said CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield.Measles was eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, meaning it was no longer continuously transmitted. So far this year, at least 26 states have seen cases. 1951
