HEFEI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- More than 4,200 people have been removed after flood-hit dykes of a river in Anhui Province suffered breaches, the local government said Sunday.Bainian river that flows across Anqing and Tongcheng cities reported five minor dyke breaches between 10 a.m.to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, forcing the evacuation. The people have been sent to safe places and no casualties have been reported so far, according to the flood-control and drought-relief headquarters of Anhui.Water levels in some rivers and lakes have exceeded the warning lines since July 8 when heavy rains began to pound the province.Rainstorms have disrupted the lives of more than 2 million people in 29 counties across Anhui Province since July 8.Rainstorms have disrupted the lives of more than 2 million people in 29 counties across Anhui, forcing more than 8,100 residents to be removed to safe places.Initial investigations showed more than 1,800 houses collapsed and some 10,000 were damaged by downpours, which incurred 500 million yuan (73.8 million U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses.A total of 14.92 million people in 10 provinces and regions along China's longest river, the Yangtze, have had their lives disrupted after torrential rains began pounding since July 8, a statement from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) said Sunday.China's Central Meteorological Station warned Sunday that rainstorms would again batter many provinces and regions in the coming days bringing with it bigger risks of new flooding and other geological disasters in central and eastern China. From Monday until Wednesday, the observatory forecast some regions in provinces including Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, and Anhui will see heavy rain.Eastern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, central Henan, Chongqing and Shanghai will also see rainstorms during the next three days.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Flooding and landslides triggered by recent heavy rain have killed at least 42 people as of Wednesday in the worst hit provinces like Guangxi, Fujian and Sichuan, while 49 others are still missing.Storms are forecast to continue to sweep across most parts of South China over the next 10 days, with some areas due to receive 250mm of rain, the China Meteorological Administration said on Wednesday. The national weather forecaster said rainstorms will also hit Guizhou, Sichuan, Fujian and Guangdong the following week. The National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert on Wednesday morning for heavy rain across parts of China. Residents wade through the waterlogged street in Nanning, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 15. A fresh spell of heavy rains has pounded Guangxi since June 14, triggering floods in some regions of Guangxi.A statement on the center's website urges officials in several provinces, including Fujian, Zhejiang and Guangdong, to prepare for "possible floods and geological hazards".Guangxi flood control and drought relief headquarters said on Wednesday that, as of Tuesday, the death toll from the recent spell of bad weather had climbed to 10 in the province, with 15 missing, and direct economic losses of nearly 400 million yuan (.8 million). The rain had also damaged 61 roads, ruined 66 dams and destroyed 1,170 houses.

BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhuanet) -- China will end the public shaming of prostitutes by parading them through the streets, the People's Daily reported on Tuesday, following controversy over cases in which sex workers were paraded in public.Ministry of Public Security has ordered the police to stop parading suspects in public and has called on local departments to enforce laws in a "rational, calm and civilized manner," the report said.Prostitution is illegal in China and police sometimes used means such as parading prostitutes in public as a deterrent. However, recent cases have sparked controversy on the Internet.Earlier this month, local media in the city of Dongguan in southern China's Guangdong province published pictures of two suspected prostitutes and two patrons who had been detained by police. The handcuffed girls were shown walking barefoot, handcuffed and tethered by a rope around their waists. In another case this month, police in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province, posted a public notice about a vice raid, including personal information about prostitutes and their clients.

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The State Council's policies to rein in rapidly soaring housing prices in cities will continue and local governments should implement them "unswervingly", according to a statement released Monday from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, while also denying some media reports on a possible policy withdrawal."We will urge local governments to make sure that they strictly implement the differentiated housing loans policy to crack down on housing speculations," the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website. The ministry added it would adopt "positive" measures to increase the supply of commercial homes in the market, speed up construction of housing for low-income residents and renovation of shantytowns, and strengthen supervision of the real estate market conditions. The statement came shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released its latest figures on housing prices in Chinese cities.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 11.4 percent year on year in June, one percentage point lower than the increase in May, according to NBS statistics. This was the second consecutive month that China's property prices grew at a slower pace. Property prices in the 70 large- and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent year on year in May, 0.4 percentage point lower than in April. The State Council, China's Cabinet, introduced a series of tightening measures in April to rein in soaring house prices and curb speculation, including tightened scrutiny of developers' financing, suspension of loans for third-home purchases and higher down-payment requirements for second-home purchases.Housing prices almost doubled in some popular Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai in 2009, prompting the Chinese government to take measures to curb these excessive hikes.
