(KGTV) - There is no threat to Valhalla High School in El Cajon, a Grossmont Union High School District Spokeswoman said Monday.School officials and San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated rumors and an unrelated social media post of a picture taken last summer featuring a student with a possible weapon off campus, reported Public Information Officer Catherine Martin.Staff members and deputies determined the BB gun was not in the student’s possession, Martin posted on Twitter.Also Monday, a 16-year-old girl at a different Valhalla High School, this one in Mt. Pleasant, New York was arrested for a threat, according to Lt. Robert Miliambro of the Mt. Pleasant Police Department.A video posted on Snapchat showed an animation of a bomb going off at the New York school.Officers searched the campus and confirmed the threat was not viable.A similar mix-up involving two schools with the same name happened last week with Eastlake High. 988
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- The District Attorney has decided against filing charges against a man who reportedly shot and killed a suspect trying to break into his work truck in El Cajon. The shooting happened on the 1100 block of Mona Place in March of 2018. Authorities say Michael Poe woke up in the early-morning hours of March 11 to the sound of glass shattering. When he went outside, he found the suspect, Joseph Mercurio, breaking into his work truck. Mercurion’s mother told 10News her son had a drug problem, but was doing his best to stay sober. Mercurio’s mother filed a lawsuit against Poe. At this time, the status of the lawsuit is unclear. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Renovations are underway at the East County Performing Arts Center to turn the nearly 50-year-old performance hall into a rock and roll concert venue."We have to change the vibe, the feel of what this building is," said Dirk Epperson, El Cajon's Director of Public Works.The venue closed in 2009 when the recession forced cuts in the city budget. Now, the renovations come as tour promoter Live Nation prepares to take over the venue. The City of El Cajon entered into a five year deal with the concert company to manage the building. As part of the agreement, Live Nation will bring 50 events to the venue in 2019, and as many as 70 events by 2023. Live Nation also manages the House of Blues in San Diego and Mattress Firm Amphitheater in Chula Vista."We're not sure what it will be like," said Mayor Bill Wells. "We've never had this regular, steady diet of top name acts that are coming in. So nobody's quite sure how much this is going to have a ripple effect around El Cajon. But everybody thinks it will be positive."The city is now spending .3 million to upgrade the facility. Improvements include new amenities like modern concessions, a more open entrance, and lobby area and new plush seating in the first few rows. The seating capacity for the main hall will also increase to 1,300. Part of the plan also calls for a brand new VIP Lounge at the back of the venue. The money for the project comes from the sale of the old police headquarters.As for what kind of acts will fill the venue, Epperson said it's entirely up to Live Nation."It can pretty much be any type of act or band," he said, adding the city will let the experts decide. "But you can imagine the ones that are on their way up or on their way down will be coming to this size venue."Smaller, local performances like school concerts and recitals will still be held at the venue, which Wells says is part of the community. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family and friends of the 31-year-old man accused of gunning down his wife and their kids in Paradise Hills over the weekend spoke Monday about the tragedy. Police say Jose Valdivia killed his wife, Sabrina Rosario, and their three children, 3-year-old Enzi, 5-year-old Zuriel, and 11-year-old Zeth. Valdivia also shot his 9-year-old son who survived but is in the hospital on life support. Family and friends say they do not agree with what Valdivia did, adding that they are also grieving the loss of their loved one, his wife, and their children. "We do not agree with what he did but as family and friends, we love him," said close friend Gavino Pinal.His friends called him a loving father and a hard-worker. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is dead after their vehicle became airborne and crashed, sending metal and pieces of the vehicle across the roadway.California Highway Patrol troopers tried to stop the vehicle on eastbound Interstate 8 at about 2 a.m. Saturday before the driver sped off.Troopers pursued the vehicle, which began picking up speed as it left the highway, CHP said.At one point, witnesses told 10News the vehicle hit a dip on Main St. near Jamacha Rd. at a high speed and became airborne. The driver lost control of the car and crashed, colliding with a tree and wall along the road.The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not immediately identified.The crash sent pieces of the vehicle flying in all directions including the car's engine block, which was dislodged and found across the road.TRAFFIC: Live traffic conditions around San Diego"Seemed like just 30 minutes of just crashing and metal everywhere," one witness said. "Just a horrific sound.
