SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some 4,500 sailors and marines reunited with their families at Naval Base Coronado Friday. Eight months ago, the Amphibious Assault Ship USS Essex and two support ships, the Anchorage and Rushmore, set sail for the Western Pacific and Middle East.The deployment was of historic significance as the military's newest, multi-use fighter jet, the F-35B flew its first combat missions in support of U.S. troops. The Navy reported the jet supported troops in Iraq, Syria and Afghanastan but the exact nature of that support not being divulged at this point. However, the Essex commander confirmed armaments were used by the aircraft.Friday, the primary focus was hugs and kisses. The "official first kisses" involved two young sailors greeting their wives with long embraces. Fathers also met their babies in person for the first time. One dad told 10News it was impossible to put into words how good it felt to hold his new son. The infant, who seemed at ease in his father's arms, then gave a big smile. Sailor Rhett Orth also held his baby girl for first time. His sentiment shared by many, of how hard it is to be away from home but how amazing it feels to be back. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University has instituted new protocols to keep the coronavirus from spreading on campus.Dr. Luke Wood, Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, said they hired security to patrol the campus from Thursday through Sunday after hours, document policy violations, and send reports to staff who handle disciplinary action."There are real consequences now of our COVID-19 policies, and that can range from a warning, to suspension to even in extreme cases, expulsion," Wood said.He said they also have a wellness ambassador program they hope to expand to 50 personnel, "so that when students come on campus physically they are being greeted and welcomed to the campus. They're reminded of our policies around wearing face-masks, around social distancing."Wood said he wants to make sure SDSU doesn't join the growing list of colleges with outbreaks."We're doing everything that's within our power to make sure that we don't follow in others' footsteps," he said. "It's demonstrating we take this very seriously."Only a third of students (about 2,600) are living on campus this year, according to Wood. In-person classes have been cut from thousands to 202. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Qualcomm won a million decision Friday against Apple in a patent infringement case involving iPhones. A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California found the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X infringed Qualcomm’s patents. One of the patents enables "flashless booting”, eliminating the need for separate flash memory. It also allows a smartphone to connect to the internet quickly after being powered on, according to Qualcomm officials. The other two patents allow smartphone apps to access internet data quickly, and enable high performance and graphics while increasing battery life, Qualcomm said in a news release. Qualcomm was awarded million in damages from July 6, 2017, the date the lawsuit was filed, through the end of the trial. "Today's unanimous jury verdict is the latest victory in our worldwide patent litigation directed at holding Apple accountable for using our valuable technologies without paying for them," said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel for Qualcomm. "The technologies invented by Qualcomm and others are what made it possible for Apple to enter the market and become so successful so quickly. The three patents found to be infringed in this case represent just a small fraction of Qualcomm's valuable portfolio of tens of thousands of patents. We are gratified that courts all over the world are rejecting Apple's strategy of refusing to pay for the use of our IP."
