The remains of Spc. Vanessa Guillen were found near the Leon River in Texas, bringing an end to the search for the Fort Hood soldier. The attorney for the Guillen family said last week that the family believed the human remains found Tuesday were those of Guillen but a positive identification was pending."The Army has identified the remains of missing Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen," her family's lawyer said in a statement to ABC News on Sunday evening.On Monday, the Army Criminal Investigative Team confirmed the remains were of Guillen's. “I know I can speak for everyone involved in this tragic situation that we are truly heartbroken for the family, friends and fellow Soldiers of Spc. Aaron Robinson and Cecily Anne Aguilar, a civilian.According to the affidavit, the suspects allegedly dismembered Guillen's body and attempted to burn it after she was bludgeoned to death by Spc. Robinson.Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, along with the U.S. Marshals, Killeen Police Department, and the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force were attempting to locate Robinson on June 30 when he fled the post.When Robinson was located, officers attempted to make contact him as he produced a weapon and committed suicide by shooting himself. Aguilar has been arrested for tampering/ fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair a human corpse, a second degree felony. The sheriff's sergeant who initially responded to last month's mass shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, was fatally shot by gunfire from a California Highway Patrol officer, officials said Friday.Sgt. Ron Helus was struck five times by gunfire from the suspect, Ian David Long, according to Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub, but was hit by a sixth bullet from a CHP officer's rifle.Helus could have potentially survived the five wounds from Long's weapon, but the sixth bullet proved fatal. It struck Helus in the chest and his heart, according to Dr. Christopher Young, the Ventura County medical examiner. The Supreme Court is allowing Florida to enforce a law that bars ex-felons from voting who still owe court fees or fines.Thursday’s decision by the Supreme Court denied the request in front of them to lift the order of lower court rulings. Their decision allows the Florida law to move forward without declaring the law to be unconstitutional or limit ongoing court challenges.Liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan dissented."This Court's order prevents thousands of otherwise eligible voters from participating in Florida's primary election simply because they are poor," Sotomayor wrote in the dissent."This Court's inaction continues a trend of condoning (disenfranchisement)," she added.The law is expected to impact roughly 1.4 million people in Florida. Amendment 4, passed by Florida voters in 2018, allowed most ex-felons to register to vote, with exceptions for those convicted of certain crimes. In 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law additions to Amendment 4 that required fines, fees and restitution be paid first before ex-felons could register to vote. The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington is welcoming its newest member — a baby Lowland gorilla.On Sunday, 15-year-old Calaya gave birth to a son, Moke — "junior" or "little one" in Lingala, a language spoken in Central Africa.“The birth of this western lowland gorilla is very special and significant, not only to our Zoo family but also to this critically endangered species as a whole,” said Meredith Bastian, the National Zoo's curator of primates, according to the Smithsonian. “The primate team’s goal was to set Calaya up for success as best we could, given that she is a first-time mother. Doing so required great patience and dedication on the part of my team, and I am very proud of them and Calaya.”According to the zoo, Cayala has been adjusting well to motherhood and has learned how to care for Moke by watching other gorillas and through the help of staff. Zookeepers helped trained Cayala, in part, by showing her pictures of mother gorillas and presenting her with toys to cuddle and kiss.“This infant’s arrival triggers many emotions—joy, excitement, relief—and pride that all of our perseverance in preparing Calaya for motherhood has paid off,” said animal keeper Melba Brown. “We will provide support to her if need be, but I have every confidence that Calaya will be a great mom to Moke.
