A top ranking member of the Sheriff’s Department is speaking about changes he feels are needed, following the investigation into Assistant Sheriff Rich Miller.On Tuesday, Team 10 confirmed Miller was being accused of inappropriate conduct. Miller is currently using his accumulated time off until his scheduled retirement on March 2nd.Commander Dave Myers, who is running for Sheriff, emphasized women should feel safe to come forward. He used the example of Deputy Richard Fischer, accused by more than a dozen women of sexual misconduct while on duty.“It took after a woman complained… another 13 women to come forward before anything was really done. If we can’t police ourselves within the department, how’s the public going to trust us to do that outside the department?” Myers said.Myers has been with the department for 32 years.“One of my goals is to create that transparency,” Myers said.Sheriff Gore told Team 10 in regards to Miller, “allegations are taken very seriously and given the highest priority.” 1023

A Phoenix restaurant caught a woman posing as a high school cheer mom to pocket money.The employees at Fry Bread House were skeptical when a woman came in asking for donations.“She told us our manager had ordered us brownies and cookies for a donation,” said Chef Kris Harris. The woman said the money would go to the Xavier College Preparatory cheer squad.Fry Bread House employees called their owner. She spoke with the woman and quickly realized they were being scammed.The restaurant alerted Xavier officials, who had already received two other reports of this same behavior. “I guess she just looked like a normal woman trying to raise money for her kid,” Harris explained. “It kind of blows your mind. I guess everybody is trying to find a new way to get something.”Xavier officials confirmed the scam and want people to be aware.  874

A New Mexico family found out quickly how tough it would be to travel during the pandemic.Kylah Guerra was just 20 weeks into her pregnancy when doctors diagnosed her baby, Emerie, with lung lesions in the lower respiratory tract. That was back in March at the start of the pandemic.Getting the proper care for their daughter would mean Kylah and her husband would not only need to travel to Children's Hospital Colorado but would temporarily need to live nearby.“They did let me know that since we are so far that they didn't want us, me, to be travelling back home. So, he pretty much said that day you're going to be living in Colorado until you deliver,” said Kylah.Doctors say Emerie showed no symptoms when she was born June 24.The family returned to New Mexico for a couple days but returned less than two weeks later when Emerie had trouble breathing.Due to the pandemic and the nature of Emerie's condition, getting back to Colorado meant they had to go by emergency helicopter.“In the moment, we were trying to get her what she needed. Our main priority was just getting her back to where we knew they could help her. Once we seen, the flight crew arrived at our hospital. It was like a little bit of a relief,” said Kylah.The surgery was successful, and doctors removed the lesions.Meanwhile, the pandemic hasn't slowed the number of surgeries done at the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Colorado, because they are considered essential. A non-profit in California has developed a way to capture poachers who snatch sea turtle eggs - building lookalike eggs with GPS trackers constructed inside them.According to research published Monday in the journal Current Biology, the InvestEGGator is a 3D-printed life-like turtle egg that can be tracked as far away as 137 kilometers (85 miles)."It replicates the appearance, weight, and feel of a real turtle egg. It is easily deployed at low risk to investigators, can be programmed and monitored remotely using web-based and smartphone applications, and is a low cost, allowing for deployment of many units at once," the company said on its website.The decoy eggs are placed in real nests alongside real eggs, which are monitored and mapped every time they are moved, said the Ventura-based Paso Pacífico, the non-profit that developed the eggs.The research showed that the decoy eggs provide a signal once every hour."Using data provided by the decoys, we identified trafficking routes and on two occasions properties of potential interest to law enforcement," researchers said in the journal. "Decoys also yielded anecdotal information, furthering our understanding of trafficking routes." 1206

Americans’ satisfaction with the direction of the country and approval of Congress are also trending down.Right before the election, a Gallup Poll on job approval showed 45% approved of President Trump. Then, a poll taken in the two weeks immediately following the November presidential election, showed Trump with a 42% job approval rating.That number has now slipped to 39%, according to the latest Gallup Poll taken during the first two weeks of December. The president’s approval rating has stayed between 35-49% over the course of his presidency.The highest favorability rating President Trump has received during his presidency was 49% in April as the country was in the initial stages of the coronavirus pandemic.As for how participants are feeling about Congress, in November, the Gallup Poll showed 23% had a favorable view of how Congress was doing. That number dropped to 15% in December. Notably, the poll was taken before a large coronavirus relief package and government spending bill passed both houses of Congress.The lowest Gallup has recorded for job approval of Congress was 9% in November 2013.There was a similar drop in how survey participants feel about the direction of the U.S., with 28% feeling satisfied in the direction of the country in October, then only 21% feeling satisfied in November, and 16% satisfied in December. The lowest level of satisfaction in the direction of the country this year was in July, when it was only 13%.“This overall decline is driven primarily by Republicans, whose satisfaction fell from 60% in Gallup's final preelection measure in October to 22% in the most recent poll, likely a reaction to the election outcome,” the Gallup Poll analysis states.Meanwhile, Gallup Poll’s surveys show approval ratings are ticking upward for President-elect Joe Biden. He had a 48% approval before the election, then 55% job approval rating in the weeks after the election.
