SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who wounded an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander by opening fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago was convicted of assault with a firearm Thursday in his third trial in the case. Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017 shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention. Pitoau was convicted in a prior trial of three felony firearm possession counts and was sentenced to 27-years-to-life for those convictions. However, both of his previous trials in the case resulted in hung juries regarding the assault charges. Jason Philpot testified that he tried to wrap his arms around Pitoau and get the gun away, but the defendant was able to pull the trigger, wounding the deputy in the chest and right arm. A second round also passed through his right arm. One of the rounds ricocheted off the sidewalk and struck Shvets. Pitoau testified that he grabbed a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Philpot, were advancing on him. He testified that he and Jason Philpot both grabbed onto the gun, leading it to fire as they grappled over the weapon. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Rancho Pe?asquitos elementary school was placed on a brief lockdown Tuesday morning as officers searched the area for a suspect wanted on an unspecified felony warrant. Rolling Hills Elementary School, on Pe?asquitos Drive west of Interstate 15, was placed on lockdown around 9 a.m. as police searched for the suspect along Avenida Montuosa, a street off Del Diablo Way just south of the school, according to San Diego police. Around 10 a.m., police called off the search and the lockdown was lifted, SDPD public-affairs officer Billy Hernandez said. Police did not specify the type of felony warrant or release a description of the suspect. 669

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A UC San Diego epidemiologist was named today to Time magazine's 2018 list of the 50 most influential people in health care.Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, associate dean of global health sciences at UCSD's School of Medicine, was recognized for her successful efforts last year to keep her husband, psychiatry professor Tom Patterson, from dying due to a drug-resistant bacterial infection the World Health Organization classifies as the world's deadliest.Strathdee urged the team of scientists and doctors to use an experimental treatment for the infection using bacteriophages -- small viruses that act as parasites to bacteria by infecting and neutralizing them."It's a great honor to be recognized for my efforts to bring phage therapy into the 21st century in North America, but it all started with my single-minded desire to save my husband's life, and it truly reflects a team effort," Strathdee said.The magazine's list honors people who "have changed the state of healthcare in America this year, and bear watching for what they do next."Patterson was the first American patient with a systemic infection to receive bacteriophage treatment, according to Robert "Chip" Schooley, the lead doctor on Patterson's treatment team. UCSD Health doctors have since treated five more patients with bacteriophages. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1.3 million ballots had been received by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters by mid-afternoon today, with around 51,000 votes cast at polling locations so far.The San Diego County Registrar's Office reported 1.36 million ballots collected by mid-afternoon out of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county.With county polling locations open early, about 126,000 residents were able to cast their votes in person over the past four days, the Registar's Office said.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one. Voters who prefer to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place on Election Day can do so until 8 p.m.An in-person voting location tool can be found on the county's voting website, SDvote.com.County voters also have until 8 p.m. to drop off mail ballots at 125 drop-off locations throughout the county, which can found on the Registrar's website.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters.
