MARTINEZ, Calif. – Until recently, not many people had heard about Martinez, a small town east of San Francisco. That is, until a Black Lives Matter mural was vandalized.“We’re really just fighting for our black community members here in Martinez and across the country, to be able to exist in America and globally, without fear,” said Justin Gomez, a community organizer in the California town. “We weren’t surprised that it got vandalized, we were more so just shocked at how brazen it was.”Gomez just wanted to let black community members in Martinez know they mattered when he got a permit to paint a Black Lives Matter mural“I hadn’t even taken off my paint clothes,” said Tati Rae, who helped paint the mural.It was only up for a couple of hours before two people were accused of trying to vandalize it.“This is just kind of a microcosm of everything that’s happening in this country around racism and white supremacy and we got to see that play out right here in our own community,” said Gomez.Nichole Anderson and David Nelson were arrested, accused of painting over the mural. They were charged with multiple misdemeanor counts, including a hate crime charge.“When people are outraged by Black Lives Matter. That’s because they choose not to challenge themselves to understand what it means for Black Lives Matter,” said Kimya Nuru Dennis.Nuru Dennis runs 365 Diversity which teaches antiracism to school districts, corporations, hospitals and more. She believes some white people become emotional when people say Black lives matter because, “This country is founded on white dominance, and anything that challenges white dominance is silenced, threatened, even murdered.”One business had its windows boarded it up and anti-BLM messages painted on the plywood. We asked the business owner about it.“Well number one, if you know the history of this Black Lives Matter thing, it’s basically a socialist move and I really don’t care for socialism,” said Charles Martin, a business owner in Martinez.“It’s brought nothing but trouble to the town, it’s brought nothing but trouble to the United States. People have gotten killed after they put this up. So, when Floyd was buried, that’s where it should have ended,” he said.Others we talked to say racism in Martinez is real and that’s why they painted the mural.“What is political about saying Black people shouldn’t be killed for no reason?” asked Rae.“Our predominantly white population doesn’t feel like it’s an issue, but that’s because they haven’t experienced this town in the way that community members of color have," said Gomez.Recently, a Black Lives Matter mural in New York City was vandalized as well. This is nothing new for Kimya.“I want Americans to stop acting shocked by this stuff. I’m not surprised when white people think it’s a good idea to vandalize Black Lives Matter symbols. It’s a representation of what this country is founded on,” said Nuru Dennis.But for Gomez, it’s an opportunity.“I think right now this is an opportunity for our town to be a model for predominantly white, smaller communities across the country, to show we don’t get a pass just because we have a less than 4% black population. Just because we’re predominantly white and we haven’t seen these issues and the way that they play out in big cities, we all need to come together, and we need to be a part of this system of change.” 3390

MILLCREEK CANYON, Utah - While fire crews were battling the "Crestwood Fire" Saturday near the base of Millcreek Canyon, homeowners and visitors in the canyon were busy packing and evacuating.During all of the commotion, Riley Burrows and Kaitlin Larsen had just tied the knot and were meeting with their guests.“We actually had a family friend come through the receiving line and told us that [the fire] had just started,” Larsen told FOX 13. “An officer then came up the line and told us we had about an hour before we had to leave. So everyone went crazy and started taking down all the decor… started getting us out of there as fast as we could.”While some may be angry their wedding and reception was interrupted by a fire, the couple laughed, reminisced and were in good spirits about it while recounting their story.“Our wedding worked out really well. We’re not disappointed that the fire happened — it was honestly quite the adventure,” Burrows said. Chiming in, Larsen added, “We now have a cool story: We were dealing with COVID, and now we can tell about a fire... Not everyone gets to say that!”The pair was married in front of a pond, which was then turned into a resource for helicopter crews battling the fire from the air — but it made for some good pictures as well.“They had two helicopters every five minutes coming in, coming down, getting water and taking off,” the pair said. “It was so cool. We all went out there and we had our photographer take a picture with us and it dropping right behind us, because it was like, 'We have to get this!'”Even first responders came to honor the newlyweds.“They came up and talked to us and gave us a little challenge coin and a hat and said they were so sorry," Larsen said. "Like, 'It’s not your fault! We appreciate what you’re doing to make it so we could finish as much as we could.'”The two have been through a lot to get married like a lot of other couples during the pandemic, but despite the difficulties and the addition of the fire, they were happy for the story that they could tell. They also had a message to others in similar positions.“Just stay hopeful. Regardless, you’re going to get married," they said. "Even if it’s just with close family and friends, you’re still getting married and that’s what matters.”The pair overall wanted to thank all of their guests for making the day so special and for being with them on their special day, despite the difficulties of the pandemic and the fire breaking out.The blaze was 90 percent contained as of Sunday evening. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities say they have seized more than 9 tons of marijuana in the northern border city of Tijuana.The federal Attorney General's Office says in a Friday statement that prosecutors executed a search warrant at a home in the city across from San Diego.A photo published by the office showed dozens of suitcase-size, plastic-wrapped bundles in towering piles. Michael Cohen and his attorney met Wednesday with a group of state and federal law enforcement officials investigating various aspects of President Donald Trump's family business and charitable organization, according to people familiar with the meeting.The group, which included the federal prosecutors from the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York who charged Cohen in August and officials from the New York Attorney General's office, met at the Midtown New York City office of Cohen's attorney, Guy Petrillo, these people said.CNN observed Cohen leaving Petrillo's office building Wednesday afternoon. Assistant US Attorney Tom McKay, the lead prosecutor on the Cohen case, had entered the building earlier in the day.The purpose of the meeting wasn't immediately clear, but both offices are continuing to investigate cases that relate to Trump entities and with which Cohen had professional involvement.Representatives for both the attorney general's office and the US attorney's office declined to comment. Petrillo didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.The meeting comes as Cohen, Trump's former personal attorney, has spent hours huddling with prosecutors from the office of special counsel Robert Mueller.
