BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rain battered several east China provinces Saturday, destroying homes and farmlands, while drought persisted in some of the country's arid central and southwestern regions.On Friday and Saturday, five counties in Anhui Province were hit by downpour, the provincial meteorological bureau said.It said 23 towns reported over 200 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours from 8 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. In some villages of Huaiyuan County, the precipitation topped 300 mm, about one third of the annual average volume.In Fengtai County alone, 2,048 people were stranded by rain-triggered flood. As of 9 p.m. Saturday, about 800 of them were still waiting for evacuation.Incomplete statistics provided by the provincial government said 280 houses toppled in the rain disaster and another 580 homes were damaged. BRUSSELS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Baby bottles containing the substance Bisphenol A (BPA) would have to be pulled from the shelves across the European Union (EU) starting from Wednesday, in a "milestone" move to better protect the health of EU citizens, an official said Tuesday."Due to the fact that there are uncertainties concerning the effect of the exposure of infants to Bisphenol A, the commission deemed it both necessary and appropriate to take action," said John Dalli, EU Health and Consumer Policy Commissioner."The aim is to further reduce the exposure of the most vulnerable part of our population, i.e. infants," he said.The ban, adopted in an EU directive in late January, would prohibit baby bottles containing BPA from placing on the EU market and import into the 27-member EU from June 1.Previously, the bloc had already banned the manufacture of the controversial baby bottles on March 1, and the industry has been withdrawing such products voluntarily.BPA is an organic molecule that is used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics, which are used to manufacture plastic materials, such as baby bottles.Traces of BPA can be released from plastic containers into the food they carry if these containers are heated at high temperatures. They may lead to early sexual development of children and could cause cancer, according to health officials.China would also prohibit the manufacture of feeding bottles containing BPA from June 1, while imports and sales of bottles containing BPA would be banned starting from Sept. 1.

KATSINA, Nigeria May 31 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 secondary school teachers are reported to have died of food poisoning, and several others hospitalized in northern Nigeria's Katsina State, the News Agency of Nigeria reported on Tuesday.The incident occurred at the weekend at a workshop organiZed by the state Ministry of Education for some 650 teachers at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Kofar Yan'daka, Katsina.The report said soon after taking their lunch, supplied by a popular corporate caterer on the fateful day, some of the teachers were vomiting and afflicted by diarrhoea, as a result of which they were rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Katsina and the Police Clinic for medication.Ten of the affected teachers were said to have died as a result of the infection.State police spokesperson Abubakar Ibrahim confirmed the incident to reporters.He said only one teacher died, while 19 others were hospitalized.He said 12 of the affected teachers had already been discharged from the hospitals, while seven others were still on admission at the Federal Medical Center and Katsina Police Clinic.He said the police had already collected sample of the food supplied by the caterer for clinical analysis.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Monday launched a week-long campaign throughout the country which aims to make the public think more about food safety.Vice Premier Li Keqiang relayed to the campaign's organizer that it is essential to publicize knowledge and regulations on food safety among the public.Li, member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that special operations and severe punishment should be adopted to decrease the likelihood of food safety scandals.As part of the campaign, a food safety inspection team under the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee held a conclusive meeting in Beijing to review its two-month supervisory tour to Jiangsu, Hubei, Sichuan and other four provinces and regions in April and May.A statement released by the inspection team on Monday said it will issue a report on food safety problems to the NPC Standing Committee.China's food safety has become a major public concern since a nationwide tainted milk powder scandal was exposed in August 2008.China's top legislature passed the Food Safety Law in 2009 which was soon followed by a nationwide food safety inspection.In the latest food safety scandal, drinks and food sold on the mainland but produced in Taiwan have been found to contain the toxic plasticizer DEHP.China's Ministries of Public Security, Agriculture, Health, as well as the General Administration for Quality Supervision, State Food and Drug Administration are also involved in the campaign.
