SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doctor's orders: Make room for a day at San Diego's Coronado Beach. In his annual list of America's best beaches, Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University known as "Dr. Beach," named the local beach among the best in the country. Coronado Beach was also the only California beach to make the top 10 list, coming in at ninth best.RELATED: Fact or Fiction: Is Hotel Del Coronado painting its lobby white?"Coronado Beach is the toast of Southern California; it is a veritable oasis by the sea, measuring hundreds of yards wide. With its lush subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf," Leatherman writes on his website.Kapalua Bay Beach in Maui, Hawaii, topped the doctor's list of beaches followed by Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach in North Carolina, Grayton Beach State Park in Florida, and Coopers Beach in New York.Beaches were measured on water and sand quality, tide and wave breaks, weather, and safety and management. Dr. Beach also gives extra points whether a beach prohibits smoking.RELATED: Hundreds of students and volunteers to clean Mission BeachSo what makes Leatherman the doctor of beaches? Since 1991, the professor has been grading the country's best beach destinations. He's regarded as a coastal expert, writing 20 books and hundreds of articles on storm impacts, coastal erosion, and beach health. 1535

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Heartwrentching video of a humpback whale tangled in fishing net off of San Diego's coast prompted wildlife experts to react quickly. But the whale's condition is unknown after rescue crews were unable to help the animal. The video was captured Friday by Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego. What appeared to be another spectacular whale sighting turned into heartbreak."We got really excited because we saw these giant splashes," Biagini told 10News' Amanda Brandeis. "From that elation to kind of, pure heartbreak."RELATED: The world's smallest whale on the brink of extinction in the Sea of CortezNOAA and SeaWorld crews were notified of the whale. But SeaWorld said the whale was swimming too fast for them to continue rescue efforts."15,000 pound animal jumping out of the water next to a small boat that they're trying to use to rescue it is extremely dangerous, " said Biagini. Now the hope is agencies further north are able to find the whale to make sure it is freed from the netting. The face of the 30-foot whale appeared to be tangled in green fishing net. The netting was a drift gill net, which hangs vertically in the water and could measure up to a mile long.RELATED: Boaters warned to watch out for newborn gray whales during late migration"They are notorious for being dolphin, whale, and sea lion killers," Biagini said.Biagini said at one point, another humpback whale arrived and swam by the tangled whale."To see something that graceful, that gentle, that harmless go through something like this that's 100 percent caused by us, there's no debate on it. It's maddening," says Biagini. "For me. that's when I really started to get emotional because these are very sentient animals that do feel a wide range of emotions."This season, boaters are already being warned to watch out for newborn gray whales making their way from Alaska to Baja, Mexico. Biagini says some adult gray whales may give birth during the trek south because of the late migration. 2028

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Former Major Leaguer Jacque Jones grew up in Southeast San Diego, and is giving back to the community. He has started an organization called "All Hands on Deck," and it's about grooming kids from his neighborhood for success, whether it's on the baseball field or in the classroom. Jones played 10 season's in the MLB but says his foundation was set during his days at San Diego High School."San Diego High turned out to be the right experience and the best experience for me to further my career in baseball," said Jones. But his major league dreams came long before he was a Caver, saying, "I knew at 5 years old I was going to be a big leaguer," he added. He went on to play at USC and was also a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and would play for four major league organizations in his career."Yes, we won a bronze medal, which I say was disappointing, but I'm blessed in the same token because not that many people can say they won an Olympic medal," Jones said, saying of his time in the MLB, "I enjoyed it and I played hard every day. I was very grateful that I was blessed to be able to play in the big leagues."Bringing him to his new venture."Percentages for African American players is down to about 4%, which was 38% at its height. I want to do something about it, and this is what 'All Hands on Deck' is about. We all need to put our hands on these kids from the neighborhood I grew up in, to make sure they have a chance to be successful," Jones said.On Nov. 21, Jones plans to donate turkeys to San Diego High School families, as well as families in the surrounding area. He will also be holding an auction to raise money for his organization."I want to start this program to get kids back to playing baseball because it's a beautiful sport," he says. 1835
