(KGTV) - Two Chula Vista parks closed Thursday due to the threat of falling trees and saturated ground amid a cold winter storm.The City of Chula Vista tweeted the closures about 3 p.m. Thursday.Hilltop Park, 780 Hilltop Drive, and Eucalyptus Park, 436 C Street, are located between I-5 and I-805 in the western half of the city. "It's what I've been working for. It's exciting. I'm ready."Medina has been boxing since she was 5 years old. She's already won 16 National Championships.At the trials, she'll face 7 other women vying for two spots at the Team USA training center in Colorado Springs."I've already fought half of them," she says of the competition. "And I've sparred against the other half. So I know who I'm going up against."Medina's father, Juan, is a former boxer and serves as her trainer. He says she's the favorite to advance out of the double-elimination tournament."I'm biased, but if I were to put a percentage on it, I'd say we have a high 90's percent chance," he says.He also says he's proud of the way his daughter has dedicated her life to the sport and the pursuit of her dream."You have to prioritize. You can't chose other things over boxing," he says. "Boxing is a jealous sport. So you have to pretty much surrender yourself to the sport. She made that choice and now we're here.'In addition to her boxing, Medina is also a full-time student at San Diego State. Some have experienced better sleep and odd dreams, while others are left exhausted.With no morning commute and nowhere to drop the kids off, the stress of the pandemic coupled with a lack of scheduling anchors can lead to sleepless nights.“They could have difficulty falling asleep or what I'm seeing most commonly is difficulty staying asleep,” said Dr. Cathy Goldstein, an associate professor of neurology specializing in sleep disruption at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.She says being stuck at home with unusual schedules shifts our internal body clocks, known as circadian rhythms, in unhealthy ways.“Now, we don't have to get up and go anywhere. So, I see people push their clocks later and they're falling asleep later at night and then they're sleeping in,” said Goldstein. “And so, the subsequent day, they can't fall asleep.”“Pandemic-induced insomnia” or “COVID-somnia” she says is also being compounded by over consumption of media on laptops, cell phones and tablets.“They also allow us to bring little miniature suns into the sleep period,” said Goldstein.A recent survey from Sleep Standards found that 98% of Americans developed sleep problems post lockdown and 68% feel stress or find it hard to sleep even after the lockdown.According to pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts, between mid-February and mid-March as the outbreak began ramping up, prescriptions for sleep medications jumped nearly 15% compared to the same time last year.“We have seen an increase in prescriptions for insomnia medications. Cigarette use among American adults is at the lowest it's been since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started collecting data on the issue in 1965, according to a report released Thursday."The good news is that cigarette smoking has reached unprecedented lows, which is a tremendous public health win, down to 14 percent from over 40 percent in the mid-1960s," said Brian King, senior author of the report and deputy director for research translation at the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health. About 47.4 million Americans, or 19.3%, used any tobacco product in 2017, the report says.He believes that the decline is due to proven interventions, such as smoke-free policies and rises in the price of tobacco products.As stated in the report, the data is from the National Health Interview Survey, "an annual, nationally representative, in-person survey of the noninstitutionalized U.S. civilian population." The 2017 sample included 26,742 adults and had a response rate of 53%.Researchers assessed the use of five types of tobacco products: cigarettes, cigars, pipes (including water pipes and hookahs), e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (such as snuff or dip)."During 2016-2017 declines occurred in current use of any tobacco product; any combustible tobacco product, [two or more] tobacco products; cigarettes; and smokeless tobacco," the report says.King added, "on balance, we still have some public health hurdles in that there is still 47 million Americans that are using some form of tobacco products, and we still have significant disparities among the groups in the country in terms of tobacco product use."So, who is still using these products, and what are they using?Beyond the 14% of Americans smoking cigarettes, 3.8% are smoking cigars, 2.8% are using e-cigarettes or vaping, 2.1% use smokeless tobacco products, and 1% are using pipes.Males (24.8%) were more likely to be smoking than females (14.2%). The highest age group for smoking was among those between 25 to 44 (22.5%); those 65 and older smoked the least (11%).
