BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao urged the promotion of stable agricultural and rural economic development and said issues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers should continue to be the top priority of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday. Attendees at the meeting studied the means to promote agricultural modernization with Chinese characteristics.     Maintaining stable agricultural and rural economic development was more important under current circumstance, Hu said.     Agricultural production was the basic support to stimulate economic growth; rural areas had the potential to boost domestic demand; and to improve farmers' living standards was a major task and also a difficult job, he said.     He called for more efforts on three major tasks of agricultural work.     First, greater importance should be laid on ensuring the country's grain security and supplies of major agricultural products.     The country should stick to the most strict system to protect and save farming land as well as stabilize the grain sowing area, Hu said.     He said the government should increase subsidies for agricultural production and continue to raise the minimum state purchasing prices for grain.     In the latest move to protect farmers' interests and boost grain output, the National Development and Reform Commission said Saturday it would raise the minimum state purchasing prices for rice in major rice-producing areas by as much as 16.9 percent this year.     Hu also stressed the quality supervision and monitoring of agricultural products to ensure food safety.     Second, more importance should be attached to promote rural infrastructure construction as well as improve social welfare and living standard of farmers, he said.     He urged increasing capital input in infrastructure construction and rural social welfare and said greater efforts should be made to improve rural education, medical services and poverty alleviation.     Third, an array of measures should be taken to promote the growth of farmers' income and expand the rural market, Hu said.     He urged more efforts to discover new measures and channels to boost farmers' income and improve the commodity circulation network in rural areas.     The program of subsidized home appliance, autos and motorcycles should be promoted, he said.     He also urged quality authorities to make best efforts to protect farmers' interests and avoid fake and shabby products flowing in to rural markets.     Speaking of rural workers employment, Hu said governments should encourage enterprises to be more responsible and employ more rural workers.     The governments could also provide more job opportunities for rural workers by letting them work on the infrastructure projects amid the country's efforts to boost domestic demand, he said.     More support should be given to migrant workers who returned because of employment difficulty in cities and encourage them to start their own businesses, Hu said.     He also suggested Party leaders and governments at all levels should apply the scientific outlook on development to their work to deal with the emerging problems and challenges facing agricultural and rural economic development, and contribute more to promoting rural reform, development and stability.

ALGIERS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in Algiers on Monday afternoon on a three-day official visit to Algeria.     During an informal meeting at the airport with Abdelaziz Ziari, Speaker of the Algerian National Assembly, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, highlighted the progress of bilateral relations in recent years, saying he felt especially delighted to visit Algeria at the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.     "The purpose of my visit is to further promote the friendship between the two peoples, expand the bilateral cooperation with mutual benefit and strengthen our strategic and cooperative ties to a higher level," Wu told Ziari. BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Tibetan postwoman walking over 200,000 kilometers in ten years to send mails for mountain villagers, a Beijing Olympic champion and a rocket engineer have been selected as Chinese youth's role models in 2008, it was announced on Sunday.      Others honored as the top ten Outstanding Chinese Youth of the Year included two journalists, a worker at a joint venture auto company and a soldier soprano, the All-China Youth Federation, organizer of the annual activity, said in a brief statement.     Although the federation published little information of the ten winners on Sunday, their inspiring stories had been intensively reported through the media.     All of their stories are about selfless devotion to career, remarkable contribution to the well-being of fellow country people, and great inspiration.     Nyima Lamo, a 32-year-old Tibetan woman, has been working as a mailwoman for almost ten years for mountain-locked villages in Deqin County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to a report on the website of the China Central Television (CCTV).     Because poor road conditions made transportation impossible, Nyima Lamo has to walk on foot across deep valleys and snow-capped mountains, often risking her life, in order to send mails to villagers.     She would not take pregnancy leave even when she was nine months pregnant because she did not want to delay letters, the report said, adding that the total length of roads Nyima Lamo had walked was more than 200,000 km.     Zhao Haiqing's story touched millions of Chinese after his hometown in Beichuan County of Sichuan Province was deadly struck by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12.     The 36-year-old village official, also injured in the quake, led fellow villagers to rescue 67 people trapped under debris and transport over 2,100 injured people to hospitals. However, he lost six family members including his son and parents in the earthquake, said a CCTV report.     Defending champion Liu Chunhong broke all the world records in the women's 69 kilogram weightlifting category of the Beijing Olympic Games on Aug. 13, making herself a household name overnight.     Song Zhengyu, a 38-year-old rocket expert, also won nationwide respect for his great contribution to the development of the Long March family of rockets, which successfully sent the manned Shenzhou-7 spacecraft on September 25.     The ten people were selected out of 30 candidates throughout the nation. The awarding ceremony will be held in January 2009.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is actively promoting the relief of tension in Gaza, and China is ready to work with the international community to bring all the parties concerned back to the negotiation table at an early date in a bid to achieve the peaceful, just and durable settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.     Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Gaza conflict, which has left more than 900 Palestinians killed and 4,000 others injured.     Zhang told the Security Council that the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue, Sun Bigan, began his visit to Egypt, Israel and Palestine on Sunday for mediation for peace in the region.     China is gravely concerned about the growing escalation of tension in Gaza, and it is regrettable to see that the new Security Council resolution, adopted last Thursday to call for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, went unheeded by warring parties, he said.     At present, the top priority is to achieve the full implementation of the UN truce resolution -- the immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a halt to the firing of rockets into Israel by the armed Palestinian faction, and unimpeded access of Gaza to the humanitarian relief goods, he said.     At the Tuesday council meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed 15 council members on his upcoming visit to the Middle East, which will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait. 

HAVANA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana.     The two leaders warmly shook hands, exchanged greetings and had a long conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere.     Hu said he was delighted to see Castro again. The comrades of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China "have all cared about your health and I brought their sincere greetings to you," he said.     "I see in person that you have recovered and have been energetic so I feel very pleased," he told Castro. "The Chinese people, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government will for ever remember all these," he said.     Castro expressed appreciation of China's relief and reconstruction efforts following the Wenchuan earthquake and other natural disasters. He once again congratulated China on its successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics as well as the success of the Shenzhou-7 manned space mission.     Hu said that the Chinese government will always adhere to the principle of long-term friendship between China and Cuba. The Chinese people will, as always, support the just struggle of the Cuban people in safeguarding state sovereignty and opposing outside interference.     China will continue to provide assistance for Cuba within its capacity, and will firmly support the country's socialist cause, he said.     "We will work with the Cuban people to continuously push forward the development of friendship between China and Cuba," he added.     Castro said he and other Cuban comrades have followed closely "everything that happened in China."     "China has a large population and a culture of long standing and the Chinese people are known for their diligence," he said, adding that the Chinese people "have surmounted all manner of unimaginable difficulties and accomplished great achievements in construction."     "As the current international financial crisis is spreading, the Chinese economy has kept a sound momentum for development, demonstrating that China is the most prepared country," he said.     China is the most dynamic nation in the world and "no force can stop it from forging ahead," he said.     The two leaders also exchanged views on the two countries' economic development and major international and regional issues, including the international financial crisis and the world economy.     Before the conclusion of the meeting, Hu again expressed his heartfelt wish for Castro's good health. Castro, in return, expressed his gratitude.     Cuba is the third leg of Hu's five-nation trip. He has attended a Group of 20 summit on the financial crisis in Washington and visited Costa Rica.     He will also visit Peru and Greece, and attend the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in the Peruvian capital of Lima.
