BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida woman has been arrested after she allegedly beat and strangled her newborn twins to death, claiming she didn't know she was pregnant before she gave birth. Rachael Lynn Thomas, 30, told law enforcement that she gave birth to the boy and girl newborns on the toilet, according to WFTV. She said that the infants later died. An autopsy report released on Tuesday revealed that there was more to the babies' deaths than Thomas' story.According to police, Thomas called 911 from her home on Sunday "in reference to an unresponsive newborn." Thomas said she left work that morning after feeling sick. When she got home, she says she went to use the restroom and gave birth on the toilet, according to reports.Police said Thomas cut the baby boy's umbilical cord with a pair of scissors, placed him inside a blue shirt and began "cleaning up the mess," according to the arrest warrant."Baby John Doe" was pronounced dead at the hospital.When investigators went to Thomas' home, they say they found the body of a newborn girl in the trash can in a carport. Police say that it appeared as though she had tried to conceal the body with trash. Detectives say that the infant's umbilical cord was wrapped around her throat and that an object was lodged in the back of her throat. "Baby Jane Doe" was pronounced dead at the scene.According to reports, Thomas claims she didn't know she was pregnant and said that she continued to have her period until this month.Detectives said that the newborn twins suffered severe blunt force trauma to their heads.Investigators said Thomas told them “they were both dead and she got scared,” according to WFTV.Thomas was arrested on Monday afternoon and charged with child neglect and one count of tampering with evidence. On Tuesday, the charges were upgraded to one count of first-degree murder, two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse. Thomas has two other children. BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana officials have announced two deaths from Hurricane Delta.Gov. John Bel Edwards said Sunday an 86-year-old man from St. Martin Parish died in a fire that started after he refueled a power generator in a shed. The governor said it didn't appear that the man had let the generator cool down before refueling it.Louisiana officials are also attributing the death of a 70-year-old woman to the hurricane. State officials said the Iberia Parish woman died in a fire caused by a natural gas leak.Earlier Sunday, officials in Florida said a 19-year-old tourist from Illinois drowned after being caught in a rip current unleashed by the remnants of Delta in the Gulf Coast.Delta made landfall Friday evening in southwest Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane and then began weakening quickly over land. It came weeks after Hurricane Laura battered the same region.Laura claimed 32 lives, though only seven of the deaths came the day that the hurricane struck. (KGTV) - On Thanksgiving Day, one Bonita family hosted dozens of volunteers who assembled gift bags for children in need.The tradition started seven years ago when Diane Zoura and her family went to an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico, and helped with their Christmas Party. They brought gifts and loved the impact they had on the children.Every year since, they raise money and stuff gift bags for foster children in San Diego. In 2017, the County of San Diego reported 2,300 children in foster care. The average age was 8 years old and most of those kids suffered neglect or abuse from their birth-parents. This year their gifts are reaching farther, partnering with the non-profit Build A Miracle, to give presents to kids in need in Tijuana."It takes ,000 to build and furnish homes for families in need in Tijuana, Mexico," 13-year-old Gabriel said. He and his family raised money and sponsored homes in the past. Thursday he was stuffing bags to give to those in need."Just imagine without their home they're just living in this rain, getting wet and their clothes are soaked and they might not have anything else to change into," he said.Each bag has an assortment of items. Some on the list: bubbles, slime, puzzles, coloring books and crayons and a beanie."Especially orphans and those who don't have that much, who don't feel loved, so we're trying to plant seeds of hope and seeds of love into these children's lives," Zoura said. BRISTOL, Wis. -- For a fruit farmer who knew little about growing flowers, the pandemic was the perfect nudge to try something new. So, he plowed over his strawberry fields to plant a patch of sunshine and it’s grown beyond his wildest dreams.Scott Thompson’s family has been farming strawberries in Bristol, Wisconsin, for generations.“We've been around for a just about 100 years.”As the general manager of Thompson Strawberry Farms, he says they’ve adapted over time starting with apples and strawberries at first.“We've kind of morphed over the years where we have raspberries and pumpkins as well.”But this year, the pick-your-own farm traded the sweet fruits for something more picturesque.“This year is our first crack at pick your own sunflowers,” said Thompson.Even though Thompson knew very little about the bright yellow flower, he started out slow, until the pandemic hit and then had a thought.“This might be something that people might be really interested in. And so, I started planting. I did a small four-acre field then another four acres, then 10 acres. So, it just kind of grew, grew, grew.”He ended up planting not hundreds or thousands, but 2.2 million sunflower seeds across 22 acres of fields.“Having sunflowers is cool, but having a lot of sunflowers, that's really cool,” he said.For visitors like Sarah Akers and her 2-year-old son Xavier, it’s an eye-popping treat.“When they said how big it was, this is not what I was expecting,” said Akers. “It definitely is more impressive than what it sounds like when you just read about it.”It’s also a paradise for pollinators. Bees buzz from flower to flower. And with 15 fields, Thompson says it’s a great outing during the pandemic.“It's a perfectly natural social distancing activity,” said Thompson.The massive blooms have attracted visitors from all over the country. Debbie Berdinski, visiting from Alabama, was enthralled.“I love it. I think it's beautiful,” she said.And the decision to swap out strawberries for sunflowers has unexpectedly turned Thompson’s farm into his very own golden field of dreams.“You could really just go out and have a fun time and kind of forget about reality for a little bit,” he said. “Just enjoy being out here in this sea of yellow flowers.”And in a year like 2020, a little sunshine goes a long way. 2320
