(KGTV) - A furnace door was not closed while the system was being operated at a San Diego County, California crematorium Thursday, sending heavy smoke containing the ashes of human remains above the area.The problem was reported at 12:15 p.m. at the Cortez Family Crematorium at 100 W. 35th St in National City, near Interstate 5 and SR-54.National City Fire Captain Brian Krebs said the furnace was in use and the oven door was not shut, sending smoke out of the chimney and the open doors of the building.The building’s heat detectors activated the fire extinguishers, according to a funeral home employee. Firefighters said the extinguishers gave off a strong odor. There were human remains in the smoke, Krebs confirmed. The plume moved east across National City Blvd. and Broadway toward the Best Buy and Walmart shopping center, according to a witness.The crematorium resumed operations Thursday afternoon. 962

(KGTV) - Two National City elementary schools were evacuated Monday morning due to a strong smell of gas fumes, leading parents to pick up their children at different campuses.The emergency call was reported about 9 a.m. at El Toyon Elementary at 2000 Division St. and Rancho de la Nación at 1830 Division St.National City Police and SDG&E evaluated the scenes and determined the odor was coming from a routine bleed to the gas lines. The children were not in any danger and there was no emergency, according to police.More than 1,000 students and staff members had already been evacuated to the Wrigley’s grocery store shopping plaza. They were bussed from that location to other schools.El Toyon students were rerouted to Lincoln Acres Elementary, 2200 S. MONTEREY, Calif. (KGTV) - A California State University, Monterey Bay professor will receive a substantial grant from the Defense Department to find methods to harness fog. The 6,589 gift will fund research on ways to use mesh-based devices to collect water circulating in fog, according to CSUMB. The DoD is interested in the study to collect usable water for drinking or irrigation, which may be useful for military personnel in remote foggy regions. "The presence of fog affects visibility and can impact Army operations,” Julia Barzyk, the program manager for Earth Materials and Processes at the Army Research Office told CSUMB. “We are excited that this award will enable the science needed to mitigate those effects as well as provide opportunities to develop the next generation of scientists." College of Science Professor Dan Fernandez, who has a doctorate in electrical engineering, plans to buy two FM-120 Fog Detectors for his research. There are 106 of the devices in the world, Fernandez reported.“We live in a region where coastal fog is an important aspect of our place.
