ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A local family is mourning the loss of a teenage girl killed in a weekend hit-and-run crash in the North County.Kirsten Tomlinson died in the early morning hours of June 6 after authorities said she was struck by a vehicle in an unincorporated part of Escondido.The 17-year-old was several feet from her home on Mesa Rock Road when the incident occurred. The teen was with her siblings and some friends, and as the group prepared to head inside for the night, Tomlinson was hit by a car as she crossed the street.RELATED: 17-year-old killed in unincorporated Escondido hit-and-runThe driver never stopped, according to witnesses and the California Highway Patrol.The teen’s father, William Tomlinson, said he attempted CPR, but it was too late.“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. I’m never going to have her back now because somebody was irresponsible,” he said.CHP officials released a description of the possible suspect car, and after seeing it on news reports, someone called with a tip that led to the arrest of 29-year-old Paul Anthony Lissona.Tomlinson’s parents are thankful for whoever called in the tip.“I need to thank her and if for some reason, understandably so, she doesn't want to be, we need her to know how grateful we are,” Tomlinson’s mother, Erica Connery, said.RELATED: CHP makes arrest in fatal hit-and-run of teen in unincorporated EscondidoTomlinson was finishing school at Escondido High School and hoped to one day be a marine biologist or veterinarian.Her family also said she wanted to be a model, and her parents said she was always taking pictures.“She was a ball of life. She really enjoyed making people laugh and smile,” said Connery. “She always wanted just the perfect spot, the perfect picture. If it wasn't perfect, it was it was re-done 100 times and it doesn't matter if it took five minutes or if it took five hours.”Now, her family is looking for comfort in all of the pictures she left behind.“She took so many pictures and I am so grateful that she did because we have thousands of pictures,” said Connery.Lissona faces felony hit-and-run charges, and a CHP spokesperson said other charges are being considered. 2189

(KGTV) - Paralympic Triathlete Amy Dixon trains, and lives by a simple motto: No Sight, No Limits.Now, new technology is taken even more of her limits away.Dixon is 98% blind, the result of a rare autoimmune disorder she got in her early 20s.Over the summer, she started using the IrisVision headset, which has helped give her a full field of vision."I can only see my knuckles and part of my fingers. The fingertips and palm are completely missing," Dixon explains when describing her sight. "With the headset, I saw my whole hand for the first time in 22 years!"The IrisVision Headset uses cameras mounted to a virtual reality-style headset. Technology within the headset helps focus the camera's view onto the part of the retina that can still process light. That creates a fuller picture for the wearer."It takes what's in front of you and remaps it on the digital screen inside the headset in a way that you can see," says IrisVision CEO Ammad Khan."I cannot wait to see how this technology will help hundreds of thousands of people around the world," he says.Dixon says it's helping her with the mundane, everyday aspects of training for the Paralympics."Writing sponsors, working on a computer, emails, doing expense reports and progress reports for USA Triathlon; it enables me to do all of that," she says. "That's equally as important as my training."Khan says this will help people with limited sight be able to do things like watch tv, play cards, go to movies, cook, navigate around their house, and all of the other mundane daily activities that people will full sight take for granted.He also says that this could help people stay in jobs longer, even as their eyesight gets worse.The headset is also equipped with Amazon Alexa and several other apps to make life easier.It was developed with the help of Johns Hopkins University and has FDA Approval. Khan says the headset is covered for Veterans under the VA system, and his company is working on getting more insurance carriers to cover it.Dixon is working towards the same goal through her non-profit foundation.Meanwhile, she's also working towards Tokyo in 2020. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County family is raising money for an Escondido Police officer with a brain tumor. According to the family, Brett Byler was found to have a large brain tumor on February 16. The family said in a GoFundMe that Byler had surgery Thursday to remove 80 percent of the tumor. Byler is scheduled to undergo chemotherapy for the remainder of the tumor. (KGTV) — Police have arrested a North County doctor accused of sexually assaulting a patient.On March 28, Escondido Police say a woman reported being sexually assaulted while unconscious by Dr. Leng Thai Ky, a 40-year-old anesthesiologist from Poway.EPD detectives investigated the woman's report over the weekend, and arrested Ky on Monday with the help of the U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force.Ky, a doctor for the last eight years, has associations with Palomar Hospital, North County Pain Institute, Sharp Community Medical Group, Graybill Medical Group, and the Desert Pain Clinic in Rancho Mirage, EPD says.Police believe there are more, unidentified victims of Ky and urge anyone with information to call EPD at 760-839-4790. 760
