SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old motorcyclist was hospitalized in critical condition this morning with injuries he sustained in a crash with a Toyota Rav4 in Mira Mesa.The man was riding northbound on Camino Ruiz at Marauder Way at 10:30 p.m. Friday when he broadsided the Rav4, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department, who added one driver ran a red light, but it was unclear which one.The motorcyclist sustained multiple fractures and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Heims said.The driver of the Toyota was not hurt. 569

SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to smuggling two Mexican nationals in East San Diego County.Mambasse Koulabalo Patara was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint, about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.The court documents claim Patara told Border Patrol agents he was an off-duty officer and showed them his LAPD identification.Patara had two men inside his black Toyota Corolla and appeared to be very nervous, shaking and avoiding eye contact, the Border Patrol said.Agents seized Patara's service pistol from his waistband after he told them he was armed.Patara was taken into custody after authorities say two of the men inside the vehicle admitted they were not U.S. citizens.Fermin Lopez and his nephew, German Ramirez-Gonzalez, admitted to being citizens of Mexico.At his arraignment, Patara pleaded not guilty. Harry Kim made the executive decision to keep north park diner open on Christmas for the first time. Right now I just work with me and my wife.”Kim has owned the diner since 2007, and says opening on Christmas provides an opportunity for more sales if everyone else was closed. He says it paid off with some extra takeout orders and others through UberEats and GrubHub.Meanwhile, at downtown's Gaslamp BBQ, a skeleton crew handled a steady stream of takeout orders. Owner Tarik Marogy always keeps the restaurant open on Christmas, so 2020 would be no different.“We know we are going to be busy today because a lot of the restaurants usually close,” Marogy said.Marogy says the barbecue has been hit hard in the pandemic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former biologist at the San Diego Zoo was sentenced Wednesday to six months in federal prison for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars by cashing payments for false invoices he created.Matthew John Anderson, 50, of Ramona, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a theft charge for taking more than 6,000 from the zoo over the course of eight years. The U.S. Attorney's Office said that as a citizen of the United Kingdom, Anderson will likely face deportation once his sentence is completed.He has paid the full restitution amount back to the zoo, the U.S. Attorney's Office said."For years, this defendant took advantage of the trust of one of our city's most beloved institutions," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "His theft compromised the San Diego Zoo's world-renowned conservation work, made possible by government grants, charitable donations and the work of thousands of unpaid volunteers."Prosecutors said Anderson created dozens of fake invoices -- often using the name of fictitious vendors -- then submitted the invoices to the zoo for payment for products that were never purchased or received. Additionally, he submitted invoices for his personal expenses.The zoo sent payments to accounts he controlled or to other third parties, who sent the bulk of the payments to Anderson, prosecutors said.Anderson worked at the zoo for more than 17 years and served as the director of behavioral biology for the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.
