CHENGDU, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged designated provinces and municipalities to contribute more to the reconstruction work in quake-hit areas in the southwestern Sichuan Province.     Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during an inspection to Sichuan on Jan. 2-4. They have made significant contribution," Zhou said.     Zhou visited officials and workers from the eastern Shandong Province, who were there to help with the reconstruction at the new seat of Beichuan County, and urged them to build a new county with ethnic characteristics and modern elements.     While visiting Yingxiu Town in the Wenchuan County, Zhou told local officials to focus on the livelihood of local residents during reconstruction.     The quake on May 12 in 2008, measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale and up to 11 in terms of intensity, left nearly 80,000 people dead or missing and millions homeless.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama issued the China-U.S. Joint Statement here Tuesday, expressing the hope that the multilateral mechanism of the Six Party Talks would convene at an early date.     The two presidents reaffirmed in the joint statement the importance of continuing the Six Party Talks process and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.     The joint statement said the two sides will work together with other parties concerned to comprehensively achieve the purpose and overall goal of the Six Party Talks through consultations and dialogues.     "The Chinese side welcomed the start of high-level contacts between the United States and the DPRK," said the joint statement.

CAIRO, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Friday, starting a two-day official visit to Egypt preceding a top-level review of action to build China-Africa cooperation.     Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef received Wen at the airport.     During his visit, Wen is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and hold talks with Nazef. He will also meet with Arab League chief Amr Mussa, and deliver a speech at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.     This is Wen's second official visit to Egypt. The first was in 2006, which marked the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomaticties between China and Egypt. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Profits of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) administered by the central government more than doubled in October from a year ago after months of declines, a senior official said here on Friday.     The 132 central SOEs reaped a profit of 79.5 billion yuan (11.64 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 151 percent year on year, said Huang Shuhe, deputy director of the State-owed Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) at the 2009 Annual CEO Forum.     In October, revenues surged by 22 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.16 trillion yuan, Huang said.     Their profits during Jan-Oct was 633.8 billion yuan, while revenues amounted to 9.83 trillion yuan during the same period.     Huang also noted 24 central SOEs had entered the rank of Fortune 500 companies.     "China's companies still face difficulties and great challenges due to roaring raw material prices, huge environmental pressure and rampant protectionism triggered by the financial crisis," he said.     He said the companies should further enhance independent innovation, improve corporate governance and accelerate the pace of "go global" to compete with foreign brands.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday visited Canterbury University to open the second Confucius Institute in New Zealand.     Li said during the opening ceremony that cultural and educational cooperation are important parts of relations between China and New Zealand.     China has become the largest source of overseas students and the fastest growing source of international tourists to New Zealand, while people in New Zealand are taking a strong interest in studying the Chinese language and getting acquainted with Chinese culture, he said.     The new Confucius Institute, jointly founded by Canterbury University and China's Huazhong Science and Technology University, represents another achievement of the exchanges and cooperation between the two nations, Li said.     He said he hoped the institute would become a link between the two countries in cultural and educational exchanges. He said Christchurch would continue to play a positive role in strengthening the two nations' bilateral friendship and cooperation.     Li arrived in Christchurch after an official visit to Australia. He will travel to Papua New Guinea after his visit to New Zealand.
